Excessive Shedding

My 2 Goldens are shedding excessively. Their diet is the same (except for eating acorns). It seems to be coming more from the hind quarters in clumps. After brushing them, I have enough fur to make a small animal. There is no bald spots yet, but I do see their skin when I'm up close. Is this a concern?

Re: Excessive Shedding

They're just getting their summer coats. My dog Penny is still shedding like that. It's normal. You just have to brush them every day.

Re: Excessive Shedding

Why would they be getting a summer coat at the end of August? Just asking.

Haha, I dunno. I'd like to ask Penny that question. She starts shedding at the end of May and doesn't stop until October. But all 3 of my dogs look like molting buffaloes right now. I attributed it to the fact that the weather here has been really weird this year.

Re: Excessive Shedding

tis the season.... my seven are blowing coat, my goldens (3 of them) look like moths ate them....

blowing coat has more to do with sunlight than it does temperature....

the golden retriever national specialty show is coming up in a few weeks and my dogs look like they have been attacked by moths... ayyy yi yi

my suggestion.... lots of warm baths an undercoat rake and a good vacuum

Re: Excessive Shedding

I bought a Furminator for mine cause they can shed like crazy (there's nothing like coming home and seeing furbleweeds in the kitchen). It's worked really well to help cut down on the massive shedding.
