Hey! My family and I already have two inside dogs. But a few weeks ago we had a dog take up with us and she was pregnant. We decided to keep her because she was so sweet and we just didn't have the heart to take her to the pound. She had her puppies (2 of them) two weeks ago. She is a great mother! But when she had her puppies she hid them up under the deck where we couldn't get to them. Finally today I was able to worm my way in and get both of them out. ( we had been able to see them before w/ a flashlight) One of the puppies is a perfect little chubby thing. The other one is still chubby but a bit smaller. BUT she only has two legs. She has one in the front on one side and one in the back on the other. Where her other two legs are suppose to be she has little stumps w/ paws. (no nails) The moma dog is treating her the same as the other puppy. I have called the vet and have an appointment on Monday but I am really stressed out and worried. The vet said as long as she is healthy and feeding she should be fine and will compensate and learn to walk but wants to see them anyway. (DUH!) Anyone ever hear of anything like this or have any advice??
Thanks! I actually found out about this dog by googling two legged dog. I emailed the owner of the dog and she actually emailed me back. Her response was to keep the puppy forever (which of course we will) love it (how could you not??) give it a strong name (am taking suggestions!) and teach it balance. Well I have NO IDEA how to teach a little puppy balance. We have never had puppies before. My dogs have all been rescued at like 3-6 months (I have a shitzu and a mini rat terrier) Any suggestions on how you teach a puppy balance?
Really you'll have to just help it along. This is going to be like teaching a baby to walk. You'll have to hold it and help it along. You could use your hands or a towel and make a sling around his belly and ease it along. You should post pictures. Poor thing =(
It's GREAT that the mother didn't reject him, but that is probably one of the reasons that she hide the babies. She probably felt like that one had to be EXTRA protected. Just be sure to keep them somewhere where you can give her and her pups some nice privacy, she'll love you for it.
Thanks Trista for the advice! A few more questions (yes I know I have tons of em!) When we were done looking at the pups we put them back under the porch and moma took them back where they came from. Should we get them out and fix them a nice little cozy spot or just leave them? I would love to take them inside but moma FREAKS OUT inside & I don't want to stress her out. We have one of those igloo dog houses for her but she has never gotten in it, she always hangs out on the porch or up under the barn or or porch. I just wish I could get to the pups daily and keep a close eye out of both of them.
And I will post a pic as soon as I figure out how.
If it were me I would not leave them outside. I would bring them inside and give them a nice cozy area that was private enough for her to feel safe. BUT since you say she freaks out inside I would make her a nice area where she feels safe.
Question for you - what does she do when she's inside? What kind of dog is she?
The vet said she thinks she is a black lab/bassiet mix. I know it sounds funny but she is really sweet. If you bring her inside she starts shaking really bad, howling, and clawing at the door. For right now we have taken the igloo and but it up under the barn. It's assessible but feels closed in and put lots of soft blankets in there. The vet said that she still may move them back but keep on trying. I have posted pics on the photo forum. They are not great pics and it's before we cleaned the pups up. I just held them up quick and took a pic w/ my phone. Moma gets nervous if you hold them too long and will try and take them from you.
Yeah, she might keep moving them. Are you guys planning on keeping the pups?
I wonder if someone was bad to her indoors and that is why she is acting like that.
I really don't know. She never acts skitish (spelling?) She is extremely friendly and loving. Const. licking you.
We will of course be keeping our two legged pup. She is going to require alot of attention and work and I wouldn't really trust anyone else, ya know? I don't know about the other one. We will just have to wait and see. It would have to be someone we would know that would love him and take great care of him. I don't want to give him to just anyone. My son is already pretty attached and we haven't even been able to see them that much so I can't imagine how it will be once they are walking around and playing with him.
