Worried!

Hi everybody, I'm worried about my puppy. He's a german shepherd and he's 5 weeks old. Since I got him, everytime he eats he throws up a little after he eats. He always makes this sound in his throat like he wants to throw up, kinda like a mucousy sound. I took him to the vet and she said it might be just the change of environment. I'm so worried about him. Any ideas about what could be wrong with him?

Re: Worried!

He's really too young to be away from his mom. Try giving him boiled skinless boneless chicken and rice in small amounts about 4 times per day. If he isn't keeping that down, go back to the vet. Puppies, especially that young can go downhill really fast.

Re: Worried!

First five weeks is WAY too young to be away from his mama and siblings.

What are you feeding and how often? It's possible that maybe you are feeding too much at one time and he needs more feedings. I don't know about GSD's but I'm wondering if it could be megaesophagus, I know this can happen in smaller breeds.

If your vet can't figure out the problem, please get a second opinion.

This is what Gracie had. She was an owner surrender at 7 weeks at my vets with little chance of living.... Lucky us, she out grew the problem and today is doing very well. weighing in at 13#. We love her dearly.

Re: Worried!

I understand that 5 weeks is to young, but let me just say that he is better off here than in the situation he was in . He has one of his sisters here with us (my brothers) and she is fine. I'll try giving him chicken and rice. Thank you. Also thanks for the link, I'll be looking into that. Thanks!

Re: Worried!

Awww, too bad that the pups had a rough start - sounds like. It's great of you and your brother to have taken them in. It may be because - if you're feeding hard food - it's hard for him to eat. You could try soaking the dry food in water to make it mushy.
Also, you should get some puppy milk replacer!!!!! This is VERY good for the pups and I would HIGHLY HIGHLY HIIIIIGHLY suggest going to get some...it's available at Wal-mart if you have one close by. They will need to lap this up a few times a day, it's something that they really need because it's packed with all the good stuff they need right now. Please think about doing this...I've raised puppies from newborns - both ones that have been born with me and ones that have been rescued. Is there ANYTHING else you want to know?

Re: Worried!

He's doing good, he hasn't been throwing up like he was. Yesterday he threw up only once. He still makes that sound though. I'm going to take him the vet again. He's very playful and has lots of energy. Thanks.
