Is She Going Into Heat??

I have a puppy that is about 10-11 months old. She has not had her first heat yet and has not been spayed. I am waiting to spay her until after her first heat (But I am not here to argue about that, that was done in another thread.)

I am thinking she may be starting to go into heat, but I'm not sure. All the dogs we have had, were either male, or were fixed at young ages so I've never really dealt with it.
The other day she was laying on the couch, and under her behind was a big wet spot. I though maybe she went potty on the couch, but it didn't smell like it.

Last night while we were sleeping, she sleeps in bed with me, I noticed a wet spot on the comforter that went all the way through to the sheets. It was kind of white around the edges where it had dried.
Is this a sign of starting to go into heat? Or is there something else going on here?

THanks for the replies.

Re: Is She Going Into Heat??

when a dog goes into heat their genetalia swells and becomes flushed, they drink a whole lot of water and if you put your hand near their genetalia you can actually feel the heat without touching. then comes the bleeding, it not much most of the time, just little spots of blood. they make little panties for dogs to keep your floors clean....

so i'm not really sure about your wet spot....that's never happen to any of the dogs in season that izve been around...has her behavior changed any....?

Re: Is She Going Into Heat??

Thanks for the reply.
Her behavior doesn't really seem much different that I can tell. She has been walking around with her tail between her legs. She will be happy looking, but her tail will be covering her bottom. Usually its a little more up.

Also, it does look like her lady parts are getting a little bigger. More so the part you can see from the back while her tail is up. I am not too sure all the technical names of that area on dogs, but it looks like the area between her vagina and anus is swelling a tad. Not like a giant swelling, but it is enlarged a little.

The places that got wet from her were both very dark fabrics. One is a drak green/olive colored couch, and the other was a dark maroon comforter and sheets. So I really don't know what color the discharge was. All I know is that it had white edges as it dried, and I know blood doesn't do this. But maybe there was some mixed in with it, who knows.

I am so confused. I don't want to leave her outside if she is going into heat, but I also don't want her chewing something inside for no reason if she didn't have to stay inside.

Re: Is She Going Into Heat??

take a tissue and whip her parts and see if you get any blood if not it's coming soon if she's swelling....
Do not leave her outside male dogs will do anything to get at her I have seen male dogs chew threw fence to get to a female your best bet would be to get a crate inside! You don't want to take any chances trust me it's not worth it......

Re: Is She Going Into Heat??

I plan on keeping her inside while she is in heat. I am just trying to figure out if she is going into heat. I think she probably will be soon, so I will most likely keep her inside from now on.
Thanks for the reply.

Re: Is She Going Into Heat??

I would not count on it just being 21 days, some stay in for considerably longer. I have seen them stand and be bred well after the 21 days. I would not trust her outside until at least a month after she definitely showed color.

Re: Is She Going Into Heat??

Well its official, my little girl is becoming a lady. This morning when I woke up she was licking and I noticed some blood. I went out and bought her a pair of the little diaper shorts things. She wasn't too thrilled about wearing them at first, but I think she is getting used to it now.

I will be keeping her inside for the next month, and I haven't taken her to the dog park in like 3 weeks already. I take her over to a school that is right near me, and we play fetch over there. I have been keeping her inside for the past week or 2, and she has been pretty good. She chewed a little, but not much. I think it was just because we hadn't played or anything that day.

Thanks for all the posts.
