I have a 4 year old great dane who has been diagnosed with wobbler's syndrome. He has mild compressions on his spinal cord but the problem arises in that he has 5 compressions on different vertebrae from C2-C6. Has anyone had any experience with the wobbler's surgery? We currently have the dog on Prednisone and I know that it only masks the symptoms. I am just worried that if I get the surgery he will come out of it worse off than he is now. Anybody that can offer me some sort of advice would be greatly appreciated. He's our child and I don't want to lose him.
Oh, please be sure to nueter your boy, as there is a genetic predisposition to wobblers and you wouldn't want to pass it on. Let your breeder know about this too, it's in her lines.
Our Chihuahua has something similar although the vet has never put a name to it, just calling it an auto immune disorder. She takes Prednisone every other day and has had good results with it. The vet says she may have to take it for the rest of her life (she is 6 years old), but compaired to how pitiful she was before this is such an improvement. By the way, the vet never suggestd surgery so I don't have any experience with that.
