| Advice please Hi,
We are not sure whether our female Ridgeback cross is sick, its confusing, one minuite she is fine, the next minute she gets obsessed about licking her privates, a few days ago she had a greeny/yellowy coloured discharge, she also has a bit of the black missing from her mouth, i think from licking to hard, she is also drinking a lot of water, and not eating her regular food, yet she will eat our food if given to her (this normally doesnt put her off her food as she has always had leftovers), she was in season about 4-6 weeks ago, which was a shorter season than normal, like i say one minuit she seems fed up, then the next she is playing with her toys and out male (castrated) staffi.
She will be 7 in april, does anyone have any idea of what could be going on with her please? we thought about taking her to the vets, then she seemed alright again, but then she starts acting wierd again, im confused, oh also she never was one for close cuddles before, now she seems to like close cuddles.
Thankyou Claire xx |

| In general, if my dog had any kind of odd discharges, she's going to the vet. I'd recommend the same for your dog. I can only venture a guess that she possibly could have a urinary tract infection (UTI). A vet visit will be well worth your peace of mind. Good luck! |

| You have a 7 year old intact bitch who just came out of season 4-6 weeks ago? You need to seek veterinary care IMMEDIATELY, the symptoms you are describing suggest that she may be developing pyometra, a serious infection of the reproductive system. She will need antibiotics whether this is a UTI or pyo...but if it is a closed pyo, more likely than not she will need to be spayed. This is definitely not something to mess around with.
I hope that your bitch feels better soon and that this is nothing serious...please keep us posted! |

| I agree, this very much sounds like pyometra. I have seen many dogs die of this. She needs to get in to see your vet ASAP.
This is one of the reasons that spaying is recommended, to prevent this life threatening disease from happening.
It is more common in somewhat older dogs, and usually a few weeks after a heat.
It is an infection of the uterus where the whole uterus can fill with pus, and sometimes burst in their abdomen. DO NOT lift her under the abdomen. Be sure to only lift her in front of the front legs, and behind the back legs. If you put pressure on her abdomen, the pus filled uterus could burst.
The symptoms come on slowly with this because the infection is confined to the uterus at first, but as it gets worse, it becomes a life threatening systemic infection, and will need an emergency spay.
Vets have a saying in their profession, "Don't let the sun set on a pyo". Meaning don't even wait until the next day to spay her, because she very well may die.
Please seek veterinary attention for this right away, and please always have you pets fixed to prevent this sort of tragedy.
Please let us know what happens. |
