| When dog can be pregnant? Dear Dog Forum Families,
I was reading the past posts about dogs pregnancy and it makes me really curios about when she could be pregnant? For Human, it's like about 10 to 14 days after period, right? Is there such cycle for dogs as well? There should be I guess. Please educate me |

| It is ideal to have a dog spayed before her first heat to prevent breast cancer later on in life. Not to mention life threatening pyometra which is discussed in another thread here about a dog that probably has it.
Also, since there are so many dogs that are killed every day for the simple reason that there are not enough homes for them, there is no reason good enough in my mind to bring more into the world. Every pup that is brought into this world means that another dog that is already here will have to die because their aren't enough homes to go around.
Your dog will be happier, healthier, and live longer if she is spayed. |

| Thank you for the replies; Sobreeze: I don't think I am following you they can be bred in the 2nd week and be going out of heat on the 3rd week come in first time at around 6 mo. old and evert 6 mo. after that have her fixed before first heat will be better for her Does that mean they can be enpregnated during the period and deliver babies 3 weeks after that? Then according to what you wrote, they can be pregnant every six month (of course that' their heat cycle) Am I getting you right? Dogged : I am aware of importance of spay for the health. As I am getting into "Dog's world " I just want to educate myself and we wil spay her pretty soon. She just finished her cycle so 4 1/2 or 5 months from now will be a good time huh?
Let's make a great dog day |

| You asked

Sobreeze said the full cycle lasts around 21 days - first week (bleeding)
2nd week (this is when they are fertile)
3rd week (they are going out of season)
If they are enpregnated they have puppies around 63 days later. They have a heat cycle every 6 months. If I am not mistaken Becky came into heat around mid December therefore she is more than likely coming out of heat now. To be safe I would keep her away from male dogs and always keep her on the lead when in public for another two weeks. I would advise you get her spayed in March. I hope that helps |

| No. I would get her spayed right away. No reason to wait. Why wait and run the risk of her coming into heat again and being at even greater risk of breast cancer later on than she already is now that you have allowed her to go through this heat cycle? |

| Dogged : Wawoo, you are really against having puppies, aren't you.
I have read couple other posts regarding this issue, your opinion is firm and so strong. Please take no offense, it is so strong it feels like you are scolding me for being stupid, not spaying her right away. If you tone down a little, it will appeal as greater advice, in my humble opinion. Thank you. Tamara: Thank you so much for clarification. It is really easy to understand (even though it was so different from us that they can get prego during period, it feels weired )Since they are in heat every six month, they have chance to get pregnant twice a year, huh? |

If you tone down a little, it will appeal as greater advice, in my humble opinion. Thank you. | I have worked in the veterinary profession for over 20 years and have worked in rescue too. I have seen all the terrible things that happen to dogs because people don't bother to learn about the animals they decide to take responsibility for and I have seen so often how the animals suffer for their owners ignorance and selfishness. So surprisingly, yes, I am a great advocate of responsible dog ownership and taking responsibility for your actions and not creating more suffering because of them. I know I come across a little strong (ok, alot strong) on these matters, but it comes from witnessing the suffering and death of so many innocent animals when these tragedies could have been avoided. I'll admit, I am cynical and have lost alot of patience for people after so many have not heeded the advice given, and would rather turn a blind eye to all the death and suffering around them, and continue to create more of it.
I do understand what you said, and I don't disagree, but I am trying to help as many animals and their owners on this board (and others) as I can with the knowledge I have gathered, and I just don't have the patience anymore to hold someones hand and try to persuade them to do what they should have done to begin with. I know it is a character fault of mine, but I don't see it changing anytime soon. I do appreciate your honest response and that you didn't lose your temper with me.
I sincerely hope you will do the right thing for your dog.

| Dogged : Thank you for your kind explanation, I fully understand why you express your opinion on the matter so strong, I would have been worse if I were in your shoes, trust me. So many people just enjoy their pets like toys and throw away when they are done playing or time comes to be responsible and to take care of them seriously, I guess. Yes I will do the right thing.
I read a lot how spay/neuter is better for the pets. And thank you for your effort to help others (pet & people) Sending you my sincere respect. Keira: I just want to educate myself on dog since I adopted her for the first time during my adult time. She just had hers middle/end of Dec. Next one should be June time frame. However, she will be spayed way before then more than likely. Have a great dog day
