Blood in stool

Hey all,

A few months ago I rescued my dog, Maverick, from a rescue organization. He had heartworms so through the rescue organization's orders, I did heartworm treatment from a free spay/neuter clinic. Therefore so far, I've never had the need for a vet and haven't found a good one yet.

Well since yesterday, he's thrown up twice, and has had some bad diarrhea. In his diarrhea, toward the end of the "session", it'll just be blood (far from a lot, but more than just a couple drops, also).

I want to say the cause of this is the rawhide bones that I've been feeding him every morning. They're very small, just a little snack to give him before I go to work in the mornings.

The animal hospital here is closed today, so I'm going to wait until tomorrow and see how he does.

However I'd like some advice from you guys. Let's say it was caused by a cut from the rawhide... is this serious? Is he going to eventually need to go to the vet and get a remedy? Or is that the kind of thing that heals on its own? This is the first time I've ever had to deal with bloody stool so I'm not sure if I should be calm, worried, or incredibly worried.

Other than his upset stomach and bloody stool, he does not appear sick. He'll run around and play with you, and doesn't seem in any sort of pain. However I've been keeping him in his crate regardless to keep him from having 'accidents' all throughout the house.

Re: Blood in stool

There is no other answer...your dog needs to see a vet. In my opinion, the sooner the better. If we tell you to wait until Monday and the dog dies = bad. If we tell you to see the ER vet and it costs you a ton = bad. See a vet.
