Need advise on new puppy from breeder

I just picked up an 8 week male yorky last night. I was told to get him checked in 24 hours for the guarantee. I did that today and find that he has
worms. This morning he tried to vomit, nothing came up. I thought from the
excitement of new home. The vet said that I am to give this medicine by mouth and dosage of medicine for the next 9 days. After getting home I
found a worm & looked like blood in his stool. He tried again to vomit, and
again nothing came up. He played for awhile with my other female yorky who
is 4 months old. Now just appears tired. Don't know if it is due to the worms,
or just being a baby and needing rest. Very disappointed that I now cannot
kennel them together for at least 3 weeks, I think. They said it could be
contagious. I'm going to call the breeder soon and other then informing her
of the problem, don't know what to expect. I paid $145.00 today for future
visits to the vet. That is only half. The other is due in three weeks. That
price is for future shots and care. Not so much for the medicine they gave
me. I just love him. Has anyone else had experiences with new pets with
worms. I'm hoping that it is no big thing, just want some imput.
Thanks in advance.
Rocky's new mom.

Worms are common in pups. Also the stress of being in a new situation may be contributing. Change him over to a bland diet. Boiled chicken (no skin) and cooked brown rice (no fats or salt added) with a small amount of canned pumpkin.

pretty much all pups have worms. You said you took him to the vet. What did the vet say?

You really should have posted this in the medical forum so that the medical people would see it.

It is very common for puppies to have intestinal parasites. It is also very common for puppies to have parasites when the breeder says they already wormed them.

What is the name of the parasite that your vet found on the stool sample test? From the description of the medication, giving it for 10 days, it sounds like it might be Coccidia. What doesn't match up is the worm he vomited. There are no adult stage worms you will see with Coccidia, but there is with Roundworms. I would call your vet and tell them about the one he vomited up and ask the vet if that makes sense, and if he was wormed for roundworms.

I would think that your vet would have told you to keep the dogs completely separate from each other, but the most important thing is to be sure your old dog does not come in contact with any stools of the new pup. That is how it is transmitted usually.

Be sure to get another stool sample test done at the end of the medication to be sure the pup is parasite free. It is not uncommon to have to do another round of the medication.

Round worms & Coccidia

Thanks for the reply. I am new on this website and have not figured it out
how to use the website. I am not computer savvy! Working at it.
The worm I found was in the stool. He has vomited up twice tonight and I
could not tell what it was. Almost looked like a noodle. I am trying to be
positive in that perhaps the pill is working it so he can vomit what ever is in
his stomach, up.
It helps to have someone out there for support. Yes I will take a stool specimen in after he is off the medicene. Just glad I took an extra day off
to bond with him.
Again, thanks.

Wink Vet said-----------

That he has round worms & Coccidia. Did call the breeder. She was surprised
as two weeks earlier he was wormed, and just fine. I'm encouraged by the
feedback that this is common. Just discouraged that I can't kennel the other
yorky with him. He is doing better then Ginger did on the paper training.
Thanks for the response.

It says alot that the breeder didn't know the pup had these parasites. They should have had a stool sample checked to see if they were clear of them. They rarely care enough to do it though, so I am not surprised.

it is not too surprisinng to see them vomit up the roundworms if they have a heavy infestation of them, but if he keeps vomiting tonite, I would call the vet.

If he was wormed for the rooundworms, you will also see a whole bunch come out in his stool over the next couple days too. It'll look like angel hair pasta.
