Agoraphobia In Dogs?

I have a husky-shepard-collie mix who is 9 1/2 years old. She is physically healthy, but over the last year she has been developping a problem. She is afraid to go for a walk. It started with her refusing to walk on busy streets. Then she refused to leave her own street. Soon, she would only go to the end of the driveway. Now, she won't even leave the backyard. The vet wasn't very helpful and said it could be from old age. But still, it's a very serious problem. She has put on a few pounds because she never leaves the property. I hate to see my dog so strung out like this. What can I do to make her better? I have tried slowly approaching the street with all of the family around her, but it doesn't help. Does she need a form of puppy Paxil?? Is this a common problem? Any info would be appriciated. Thanks!

Have her eyes checked and get a 6panel thyroid (has to be sent out, not an in house test) reward heavily for all brave behavior and take it SLOW. Never force your dog to do anything as that could make it worse and she may feel she has to defend herself. Get “Cautious Canine” by Dr. Patricia McConnell and start working from the book (available at Amazon and Dogwise.com).If the tests come back clear, you may have to get a behaviorist or trainer experienced in working with shy dogs involved. Be sure the trainer uses Positive re-enforcement and NO punishment or Flooding methods as that could be harmful. Here are some links to certified trainers and behaviorists.
