Dog has the runs :( (I know, nice topic huh? :)

Okay, so Pancake is basically constipated sometimes and when she is able to go she has the runs. I adopted her two weeks ago and before then she was used as a puppy mill breeder (poor thing), so she is not yet housebroken.

I am wondering if anyone has any good remedies to help her. I posted in the food forum for good ideas for food that she will eat and that may help her, but until she gets adjusted to food does anyone have any ideas to help her?

Thanks!

So glad you rescued that precious dog! For the runs, I have used cottage cheese. Others on here have suggest canned pumpkin (but not the kind used for pies). Have you checked with your vet on what the cause might be? Could be a bacterial infection. Or if you switched her food that could cause it too.

I know I wasn't much help...

P.S. I hate puppy mills!!!! Such a sweet face.

She is precious! I did bring her to the vet and they tested her for everything and there were no infections to speak of. I think I'll try the canned pumpkin and cottage cheese.

I think it may be her food because I have absolutely no idea what food she has had in her life I have already tried a few different ones and nothing helps. Poor baby.

But thank you, it did help.

Thank you for adopting a rescue!

Possibly she is still a little upset and stressed with her new surroundings. I would suggest a bland diet for awhile, until she settles in. Either canned/dry I/D (purchase at the vets) or boiled chicken and rice. When she is doing well then gradually introduce her to the new food you want to feed her.

Good luck and keep us updated.

They should treat her for coccidea and giardia I know it sometimes does not show up in testing. With her coming from a puppymill I have had this problem with a puppy before that came out of rescue. It was exposed to everything. It took 30 days of albon and flagl to get over it. The Vet also had me put her on Fastrack . Its the same one for horses a probiotic supplement that worked wonders after the meds.

Poor baby is right
How long have you tried them for? It may take a week or two to get used to a new food since you couldn't gradually change her over from what she was eating. Give her a chance to get used to a food before you switch- it will only cause more problems
I agree to the bland chicken and rice diet for a while until her poop firms up, and then put her on a good quality food
Good Luck

Canned pumpkin worked wonders on my dog. (for the only one who's ever had them.) Blaming RBark and Harrise for the runs might help too...

Something bland, or if your vet presribes it some sort of Science Diet might help, and when you beging running low, then you can start switching over to high quality (or highest quality you can afford) kibble, or a raw diet.
