Unhappy Canine Diabetes

Can anyone reccomend an easy to use glucose tester? My dog's diabetes has been difficult to regulate, so using an at home tester should help.

Also, if anyone has any experience with canine diabetes, please share. I'm relativley new to this, so I can use all the help I can get. Thanks!

Hello,

I have been a veterinary technician for many years and have dealt with lots of diabetic dogs.

I think the machine I have been using recently is called an Accucheck, but I can't remember for sure, I'll have to check at work. In fact it may be called an Accucheck Advantage.

The issue here would be how are you going to get the blood for the testing? Most people take their dog into the vet routinely to have testing done and they get the sample from the vein. There are some machines that use the ear flap and have a "shooter" that punctures the ear and then uses suction to get the blood out so then you can do the test. I haven't had much luck with those.

If you have any other specific questions, I will be happy to answer any that I can. I teach people how to give injections and all the other things you need to know regarding diabetes, so I do have experience with this

I'm very rust about it now, because its been almost 4 years since I lost my diabetic dog.

She was a Yorkie, and had to have two insulin shots a day, 12 hours apart.

I never did blood testing at home. We spent many trips at the vet, though - having blood curves done.

In the end, her other health problem - Cushings Disease won out.

I'll see if I can find any leftover information I have about her, to see if it could help you at all.

Most of our clients use Diascreen urine test strips for at home testing.
