Young Dog, Shaky back legs

I have a healthy 2 year old english mastiff. Since he was a puppy, his hind legs have shaken. They shake as he sits down, and stands up. They also shake the whole time he is sitting down. He seems to be having more and more trouble getting up and laying down. Other than this, he is completely healthy. The vet disregards the shakiness. He is only two, but the way he shakes looks like an old dog with arthritis. I am worried it is a spinal or hip issue. If anyone might know what it is, please let me know. Like I said, his only problem is the shakiness...

I would go and get a second opinion from a vet.

Also do you have him on any supplements? Maybe try Omega 3's as well as a Glucosamine supplement.

How much exercise does he get?

First off I would go get a second Opinion no vet should disregard your concerns no matter how little or minor they are.

You can go to a vet and have his hips OFA certified. This is done by the vet usually takeing your dog for a few hours, Putting them under and having the hips xrayed. This will cost about $150 to $300 You can then send them in to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals http://www.offa.org They have a group of Orthopedics that look over your dogs hips and rate them Excellent, Good, Fair, Poor. Doing this will give you a better Idea of how his hips are. Since he is such a big breed dog hips are very important to monitor as well as Elbows.

Good Luck And I Hope To Hear What You Find Out,
Diane

Re: Young Dog, Shaky back legs

I have a 10 month old, 140 pound EM and he has never once shaken at all- sitting, standing, lying down- never- if he would I would have MADE the vet check him out. I suggest you get another vet to check out this problem.

Can I ask where you got your guy from? A reputable breeder, pet store or otherwise?
