Re: when can a puppy have its first visit?

Puppies should start getting thier vaccines between 6-8 weeks of age. So no your pup is not too young to have it's first vet visit. In fact a dog can never be too young for their first vet visit if they need medical care. What breed is your dog? If it's a toy breed and/or extreemely small right now they vet may have recomended to wait on the vaccines untill your pup is bigger. Untill your pup is finished with it's series of shots it's not safe to take your pup out to places where unknown animals could have been. Your vet should advise you when it's ok to start taking your pup out and about.

No it's not weird, I would say the vet thought your pup was too young for vaccines not for an exam. Are you sure he is 7 weeks old? I would wait another week and get appointment and if at all possible you go with the pup to the vets. If you have any questions make a list and go over them with the vet. Please bring a fecal sample on your first visit.

Briteday: It's a Min Pin and they got him at 5 weeks old.

ill probably take him myself to the vet on the 31st. i would take a fecal sample with me, but the puppy goes #2 usually close to bed time. so it wouldnt be a fresh sample. so i think its best for the vet to probe it.

7 weeks? That is too young to be away from his mom.

8 weeks should be the youngest a breeder releases a puppy to their new owner and by that time they should be on their first or possible second round of shots.

Also, a fecal sample should be as fresh as possible to bring in to a vet

I've always thought the same thing. When mom starts to wean the pup would seem to be the right time. If I was going to adopt a pup I'd pay, if necessary, the bitchs owner to keep the puppy as long as necessary.
