Very very sad Please help or any prayers

We got a Yorkie about 7 months ago since it was born. Two nights ago I woke Bailey up to go up stairs to sleep with us as usual. He seemed as if he was stretching and frooze up, stiff like a stuffed animal. I wondering if he just had a cramp since we took the little guy up on the trials and ran across a field. We took him into the emergency room and the doc asked if we had marijuana around cause this is sometimes the cause? I said "No"! Bailey was better the next day and we took him home.

We took him to our regular vet to get a bile acid test to see if he had a liver shunt. He was normal before eating but after eating he had a 26 and 15 was normal. So I'm so devistated since they want to re-test him again next week to confirm this. What ever he could have eaten still could be in his system since he is only 4 pounds.

Financially, were close to spending $1,000 after the second test and the emergency room visit. And the cost of liver shunt surgery is in a ball park figure of $2,000-$3,000 dollars. I don't know what to do! We just bought a house and my fiance and I are expecting our first baby. I look at Bailey and talk to him saying please have eaten something bad. I'm stressed, dissapointed, helpless etc... Any advice would help... Thanks for reading.

Oh, I am so sorry. I don't have any advice but I will pray for you and your family. Let us know how Bailey is doing.

I uh dont have any advice either. Maybe the vet can work out a payment plan with you.
Shunts are more common in toy breeds than others.. But not sure what else to say..
Why did the vet suspect marijuina? ( however its spelled..)

I have no idea. He said he had a dog earlier today with the same symptoms. I don't understand why marijuana would cause that anyways (a seizure). Maybe since he's a small dog the toxins could be more fatal and cause more harm? I just don't know...

I've heard of this with marijuana before, too--and the dog ATE it while they were out on a walk (dog was off-leash in a field). Any chance your little guy could have snagged some and eaten it on your walk? It wouldn't take much for a dog that size...

Yeah, marijuana grows wild around here, too. It's not "real" marijuana....if someone smoked it, they wouldn't get high; it's the remnants of industrial hemp that was grown in the '30s. But I'm pretty sure it's still toxic. So that could still be a possibility. I hope your doggy feels better soon, and it's nothing too serious .

Thanks for all of you that have replied to the post.

I sure hope it was something along the lines of him being intoxicated to say the least. He got the bile acid test two days later after going into the emergency room. I'm hoping its still in his system when the test was taken. So were going next week for another test. I'm crossing my fingers thats its negative!

Re: Very very sad Please help or any prayers

Lots of prayers, positive thoughts and energy to Bailey. Maybe you could create a web page with paypal and ask for donations? Or ask your Vet if there is anyway he can give you discount.

I was reading a book about self made women millionaires (millionaire women next door) and the author said encourage your kids to be vets, because many of the women / case studies were vets and had made their money with their own veterinary practices. If they say no - you have lost nothing.

Surely sometimes they must give people a break, when they are making huge sums of money.

Good luck

Re: Very very sad Please help or any prayers

My heart goes out to you. I just went through an ordeal with my hound being in pain, stiff and obviously, there was something wrong. X-rays revealed massive gas pockets in her intestines. Did your little guy have any x-rays done? They will reveal if indeed there is something he ate that he should not have or if anything is punctured.

Dogs don't usually eat plants that are toxic, and if their tummies are upset, they eat grass to purge their system.

Maia got into a manure/sawdust mixture. The wood from the sawdust, when mixed with acid from the stomach, created the methane that caused the severe pain, bloating and general stiffness in one extremely sad dog.
