Dog spending the night at vet after surgery?

I haven't scheduled it yet, but my puppy will probably go to the vet to be spayed next month. It bothers me that they said she will spend the night there. I wouldn't mind so much, but they said that nobody would actually be there overnight. Wouldn't it make more sense for her to be at home, where we could be with her?

Yes it would make more sense for her to be at home or at a 24 hour clinic where there is staff.....

I would talk to the vet directly about this.... my dogs do not stay overnight at the vet alone.... if they need to be overnight they are transferred to the ER clinic where they can be supervised

I agree wtih you, it doesn't make much sense to me either

Re: Dog spending the night at vet after surgery?

Hehe, a friend of mine just had her dog spayed by a vet that normally prefers to keep the dogs overnight (not a 24-hour clinic), but she bugged him about it and he let her take her dog home right away. So you can always ask, and be obnoxious about it if you have to---it's YOUR dog, after all. Free enterprise....if he doesn't want to accommodate your preferences, you can always go somewhere else, and sometimes it helps if you remind them of this.

Yeah, thanks you guys. I'm kind of wimpy sometimes and tend to avoid confrontation. But, this is my baby! I will talk to the doc.

My vet keeps most dogs overnight for s/n, except those that she know will do everything she tells them too and will bring the dog in immediately if anything happens.

This would make sense if someone was at the clinic overnight to keep an eye on the dogs, but the clinic I'm talking about does not. And evidently the OP's clinic doesn't have anyone there either. I'd rather keep an eye on my dog than have her spend the night in a cage, with no humans around.

Our vet does not keep animals overn ight for spay/neuters they are dropped in the morning and out before closeing..Even for C-Sections they do not keep them overnight (our last was released right after the operation and sent home I had major issues with that and the fact that the crappy ER vet didn't give her pain meds long story)

Our vet office doesn't keep pets overnight for the same reason. There's no one here after hours, so if something happens no one will be back till morning. The only time we keep pets overnight is for cat declaws and if the pet is stable but needs to be kept on fluids though the night.

I'm sure they'll let you take him home if you ask. Express your concerns about the clinic not being staffed overnight and you'll feel safe having him home. I had Bubba neutered and he also had eye surgery - both times I asked to take Bubba back home and I'd bring him back in the morning, the Vets didn't have a problem.

Re: Dog spending the night at vet after surgery?

My vet keeps feline spays & declaws overnight because they're still grogged out and hallucinating from the anesthesia at closing time. Keeping them in a kennel overnight keeps them from hurting themselves. Plus, the vet checks the incisions/paws in the morning and gives them an injection of antibiotic and long-lasting pain reliever.

Re: Dog spending the night at vet after surgery?

Animals should never be left alone after surgery.
So many vets leave them and it makes no sense.
What if they aren't coming out of the anesthesia?
Who is there to help?
They could be in pain and nobody would know (or they would find out eight hours too late).
It isn't unheard of for incisions to come open and then the body is wide open.
Sometimes IVs are left in. What if the animal rips it out?
And if an IV is NOT left in a smaller dog, how do they know it isn't going hypoglycemic or dehydrating?
It is best to bring them home unless somebody is there, awake, the whole time.

Ellie came home about four hours after a spay and liver biopsy.
She did just fine.
Her vet is staffed 24 hours, so I would've let her stay but it isn't necessary.
