car sickness

Hi, I have a husky/lab mix male that is just over 4 months old, who tends to get car sick. He does not get anxious or nervous and will sleep when car is moving, but as soon as he wakes up and moves around he throws up.

Does anyone know what I can do or give him to help him? Someone once told me to try an over the counter for motion sickness. Any thoughts? Is there anything more natural to try? And how much would I give him? He is 35 pounds.

If anyone has any suggestions I would be glad to hear them. I have never had this problem before. Thanks.

Re: car sickness

I think there's another thread floating around about motion sickness. Try doing a search for it. They recommended Drammamine. I'm not sure of the dose, you should probably ask your vet about it.

Re: car sickness

I had the same problem before with my dog (about around your dog's age). My vet told me I can give him half a tablet of dramammine 2 hrs before he gets in the car. (no food 2 hrs before either) For longer car rides I was able to give him a whole tablet. Try taking your dogs for shorter rides and extend the trip longer as he feels more comfortable. Keep him away from the window (if you can) so he won't be able to see how fast things are going and gets him really dizzy. I have tried covering the back passenger windows with towels. My dog used to start drooling as soon as he gets in the car, but since I've taken him out for rides, he automatically jumps in the car when he sees the door open and is ready to go!
Hope this helps!

Re: car sickness

I was having the same problem with my Ash. I think he just has to get used to the car ride. I started taking him out for short trips every day. Since I was going to be driving for 20hrs from FL to NYC, I took him to the vet and they prescribed something called cerenia. He has not thrown up in the car ever since.

Good luck with your puppy.
