| Bad Booty Odor I apologize in advance for the term I'm about to use. Is it possible/common for a dog to shart (you know-- a fart plus some substance)? My dog is a spoiled lab/husky mix. Spoiled not in discipline, but in the fact that I let her sleep on my bed and lay on my furniture. But occasionally, she'll wake up from her nap with a start, jump up, and whirl around to where her backside was, and start licking the couch or bed assertively. And instantly the air is filled with a terrible smell--but it does not resemble the smell of her poo. I'm not just trying to go on about the gross afairs of my dog... I simply want to understand it if I can. It only happens every few weeks, so it's never pushed me to the point of banning her from the furniture.
Help. Is there a way to make this stop? |

| Re: Bad Booty Odor Sounds like anal glands to me. Your vet or groomer can express them for you so it won't come out randomly. Or you can do it yourself, it's yucky but saves you a trip. |

I'd recommending taking him into the vet at least for the first time so they can show you how to do it properly. |

| Re: Bad Booty Odor You can also do it externally... get a tissue, hold it over your dog's anus, and squeeze... firm but gentle. You want your fingers to be on each side of the anus.... the glands are at 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock.
It sounds icky and traumatic, but my dog seems to appreciate it. He was a little unhappy when the vet did it internally, but I think that's because of the position he ended up in... wasn't very comfortable. He gives himself a lick or two afterwards and runs off to play.. happy as a clam. Quote:

| Re: Bad Booty Odor Anal Glands I had the same problem with my Tuesday. She was only 8 months old and stunk so bad, I did not want her on my lap, where she loved to sleep. I did not want to always be pushing her away, SO after a lot on agonizing over this decision I decided to have her anal glands removed. It was the best decision I could have made. She had NO problems at all and was not incontinent even one time. You do need to be sure you go to a reliable vet to have this done. The cost for us was $660, and worth every penny. |

| Re: Bad Booty Odor if you do decide to express them yourself, which is fine to do most of the time, make sure that the glands aren't verry hard to the touch. if they are get professional help this time. if you go to the grooming forum in this site i think you will find more info on this issue, and how to deal with it. good luck. |

| Re: Bad Booty Odor IF it is the anal glands I highly recommend you have a vet show you how to express them correctly. It is not difficult, but there is a little knack to it. If done incorrectly you will make the problem (if any) worse.
Here's a link to show you how http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_anal_sacs.html |

| Re: Bad Booty Odor Yep anal glands. My Male had the same problem and the vet recommended expressing the anal glands. I actually saw a video on how to do this on Youtube. I highly recommend though that you do this while giving the dog its bath. Now that foul burnt smell is gone. I am sure I will have to do it again. MY female did not require this so some dogs need it more than others. |

| Re: Bad Booty Odor I have to take my dog to the vet once every other month to get his anal glands expressed otherwise he leaks, eww... Anyways, at the groomers that I take him to it is supposed to be part of the service to express the anal glands but the groomer only does it from the outside and his won't express from the outside. I take him to the vet to get it done and I make sure the actualy veterinarian does it because when the vet tech did it, she didn't do it right and I ended up having to go back. I'd much rather pay the 10 dollars to have the vet do it then do it myself because it smells SOOOOOOO bad. I just call it stenching, makes it easier to refer to when having a conversation |

| Re: Bad Booty Odor I did my dog one time. Make sure you do it outside. It can shoot at a distance. |
