Please Help!

hi everyone,
i have a 12 week old shih tzu, Maggie...this morning when i woke up Maggie was not her usual self, not playful, wouldnt eat, or drink. As the day went on she was no better...then about an hour ago i noticed blood coming out of her rear end, no diarhea though...i freaked and called the vet, she told me she had no idea as to what it could be without seeing her and told me to give her kayopectate....she has had all her vaccinations including parvo,..she has not been out of my house for anything, and is puppy pad trained...can a puppy still pick up parvo after being vaccinated for it? has anyone had this happen to any of their dogs/puppies? i am so worried about Maggie. my first stop is the vet in the morning

Not all puppies respond to the vaccinations at the same time. They don't really need 3-4 shots for everything but by doing that vets hope to catch the "window of opportunity" with the majority of pups.

Maggie is doing a little bit better this morning, but still not her old self so i am taking her to the vet....and she is not happy with me....lol....she wont open her mouth for me at all for the kayopectate....buti found a way around that.....i put the medicine syringe in the cheek between the teeth & cheek(if thats what you call it) and she has to swallow it. she has been hiding from me since yesterday which is not her and when i got up to get my husband out the door to work she came and found me....so a little bit of hope. my husband was wondering if maybe she got into something that she shouldnt have, i guess its a possibility but everything is up high that isnt good for her, including all my household chemicals. i will update everyone this afternoon after the vet visit.....

Poor Maggie 12 weeks is awful young to be so sick. I'm wondering why the vet suggested Kaopectate without seeing her.

Puppies get into lots of things. You should puppy proof your home. Please keep your household chemicals in a cabinet she cannot get into.

I hope Maggie is okay, will be waiting for your update.

hi everyone,
i have some news to update....Maggie was too sick to help, way to weak for the meds required...the vet did confirm she had parvo. i put her to sleep, because i didnt want her to suffer anymore. this is so hard i just keep looking around for her, and keep thinking shes going to come want to sit on my lap. one question i did ask my vet about was my other dogs he said they should all be fine since their vaccines are utd. is there anything i should do disinfecting wise(is there something special i should use) usually i use bleach water to disinfect. should i throw out maggies soft bed and toys that she chewed on? any answers to my question will be greatly appreciated

I'm so sorry for your loss. Parvo is a nasty virus that can easily live in the environment for up to a year. You need to bleach everything maggie was on or around. If you have carpets or furniture that can't be bleached, then I would hire a professional steam cleaning service to come over, and contact your vet to find out if there's anything else you can do to clean then unbleachable items.

And throw out any items that she was using, beds, chewtoys, food & water bowls, etc..

Do a search at the top of the page for parvo. We have had several members in simialr situations.

Basically throw away (in sealed plastic bags) anything that the dog used, bleach any hard surfaces (don't wipe the bleach dry, let it evaportae, it is the evaporation that kills the viral particles), anything that can't be bleached spray until damp/wet with Lysol (no other brand and again leave to evaporate), any upholstered furniture or rugs will need to be steam cleaned professionally. And don't forget to pick up everything she may have pooped outside. Douse the area where she pooped with bleach.

Notify the breeder or place where you got the pup from. Parvo spreads quickly and it is quite likely they may have other sick animals.

Lastly, you should not bring any young puppies or kittens, elderly, or sick animals to your house for at least one year.

Parvo is a very nasty virus that can live in the environment, indoors and outdoors for years.
