Hips Problem shepherd/golden retriever

Hello,

My name is Desirée and I from holland and my dog has problems with his hips. He cant stand long en sometimes its difficult when he wants to walk away that he crashes treu his back legs. My english is not so very very good so I hope you can understand what I'm trying to explain.

The dutch word is Heupdysplasie but I dont think that it ring any bells with someone over here.

The problems with the hips is difficult because the docters in holland say they cant help him with a Brace or something so my question is if there is somewhere over the world a brace of something else to fix this problem.

The dog is a shepherd/golden retriever and he is almost 14 years old

If you you dont understand it of have some other questions please ask them because I'm looking forward to find a solution for his problem.

Thanks.

With kind regards Desirée from holland.

Re: Hips Problem shepherd/golden retriever

Sounds like Hip Dysplasia (Dutch is a lot like English sometimes ). In the U.S., vets commonly do surgery to correct HD. It's expensive, but it works. Although it would be really risky at his age. Or, you might want to look into a pet "wheelchair" for him. There are plenty of websites to choose from (like this one: http://www.dogkarts.com/ ), but I don't know how much it would cost to ship one to Holland. A good supplement can help, too. My mom's dog takes this product: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...9&pcatid=14069 and it really does help her a lot.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I had a german shepherd/golden retriever growing up that had some bad hip dysplasia. We had it operated on once but it still was very weak his entire life. When he was 12 he just couldn't even get up anymore or stay standing so we had to euthanize him. I miss him so much.

At 14, I don't know if vets would do a corrective surgery or not.

I wonder if a wheel-chair type thing would help him? This type of thing: http://www.doggon.com/products/whlchr.html
