collapsed trachea

Hello all, hope everyone is doing well?

I have a question, my dog Snippy, has a collapsed trachea. we took him to the vet and she confirmed via an xray. i've read about using some cough suppressants, limiting activity, changing diet etc. does anyone have any experience with this problem and could they give me some helpers as to how to assist Snip in making his life semi-normal? What kind of diet change? do humidifier's work? what about sleeping at night how to make this comfortable for him? how often to use cough suppressants? Any help would be greatly apprecited!

I don't have any experience or suggestions for you but I just wanted to say sorry to hear about Snippy.

Hope someone here has some useful information for you. Good luck with Snippy.

Re: collapsed trachea

All of my dogs have trachea problems to some degree. It is very common in small dogs. However, your vet should have given you an indication of how severe your dog's problem is. They can tell from the x-ray.

If your dog is overweight I would put him on a diet. Losing weight helps the trachea problem. If your dog has frequent coughing there are meds that can be prescribed by your vet. In the worst of cases the vet may suggest surgery to fix the problem. Also, we found that controlling our dog's allergies helped with the coughing as well.

If your dog gets into a coughing fit, I have one that will do that if she gets super excited, just pinch the dog's nostrils shut. This forces the dog to breathe through its mouth and the coughing stops pretty quickly.

Talk to your vet about your concerns, especially if it is impacting normal daily function.
