Nuetering my dogs

Hi guys Im so nervous I want to Nueter my 2 dogs I have a chi and a Yorkie One is 2 and the other is 1 , however my yorkie only has one testicle. SO it may be more of a surgery for him. The thing is I want to buy a small chi eventually and I dont want my bigger dogs humping my new puppy its just not right ha And their aggression Im afraid they will hurt the little pup ..so I am wondering about other peoples opinions on nuetering. And if anyone had any bad experiences. Am I doing the right thing? Help! Im so worried to hurt them and they will be so scared going to the vet and being alone and being put to sleep I am scared for them they will think Im leaving them.

Am I allowed to stay with them the whole time ? I dont want them to think I left..

Re: Nuetering my dogs

The condition you are describing is called "Chryptorchidism". I have a HORSE that had it, before I got him gelded (neutered).
Do get the dogs neutered. It may be a little more expensive, but not doing so, can have all of the regular drawbacks of having an unneutered dog (aggression, territory marking, testicular cancer, fathering unwanted litters), as well as incresed pain in the event of arousal/certain physical stresses.
It is also considered a conformational defect in all breeds and would render a dog not a suitable breeding candidate.
So, yeah..neutering is the right thing.

Re: Nuetering my dogs

Thank you for answering it means alot to me Im so scared I lost 2 animals to a vet so you can imagine how scared I am. But I really want to get it done because my dogs need to be less aggressive and stop the marking and embarrassing little dances they do. My chi is more sexual than my Yorkie only because my Yorkie is younger and doesnt quite know what hes doing but I do adore them so they are my best friends in this world So I want to do the right thing. I dont care how much Id pay anything to make sure they are healthy. I also want to adopt another baby but when I adopted my Yorkie my chi humped him to death until the yorkie grew bigger ,,then I was happy that it stopped they fight once in awhile but I notice that they cant be without each other theres a real love there. If Chili my Yorkie bit my chi Prince and hurt him he cries all night until he sees that hes ok like he didnt mean it.. I want to see the difference when I nueter them I just cant stand to leave them at the vet and I cant bear to see them in pain But I have to do it. I will try to set up an appointment next week I love my dogs so much

Re: Nuetering my dogs

If cost isn't a problem, you can ask the vet to do pre-surgery bloodwork. It's not usually necessary for young, healthy dogs, but it will help set your mind at ease to know if their internal organs are working properly (which is important for metabolizing the anesthetic safely). If you can, talking to other people who have had their pets neutered by that vet will ease some of your worries.

Neuters are very simple surgeries, with few complications. The anesthetic is the biggest worry, which is why you might want to go for the bloodwork. The retained testicle will cause the vet some extra work, but it's not a big deal. The surgery for that doggie will probably cost extra.

As for staying with them the entire time, this is probably not possible. Even if it were possible, it's not a good idea. Even some vets and vet techs don't like to do surgeries on their own pets, since it's so weird seeing them under the anesthetic. Very eerie, trust me---I once took a feral cat home from her spay while she was still fully under, and it was unsettling. And, you don't want your boys associating you with the vet's office. It's much better to just drop them off, let it all happen the way the vet has been trained to do it, and pick them up when they're feeling better.

You can ask for pain pills for your babies. A lot of vets don't offer them for routine neuters, but if you want to give them a little extra comfort, they are an option. The vet may have a good reason for not wanting to give them pain pills, but you can at least ask.

If you have any doubts about your vet's skills, or think you're just being brushed off, try another vet. You want to find a clinic where the vet and the vet techs/assistants all care for your boys very much. If they fuss over them while they're in for routine stuff, that's a good sign .
