female beagle incontinence/infection in "that" area...

advice needed!!

Here's the story:

Ginger is almost 2 years old, I adopted her when she was around 1. Her previous parents had her fixed. After a few days, I noticed that she was wetting her bed at night. Her previous parents didn't mention this . So I took Ginger to my vet to have her checked up, she was prescribed Prion to control the incontinence.

Few months go by, nothing really improved - I did begin to notice that she would urinate very frequently (about 10-15 times a day) but urinates VERY little. Trip #2 to my vet, she was prescribed anti-biotics with suspicions of a bladder infection. However, the tests came up negative for an infection, but all the symptoms were there. My vet suggested the anti-biotics anyway.

Another few months have passed, and now I'm really worried. Nothing has improved, she's still wetting her bed, leaking during the day at times, and now her pee is really clear. Her vulva looks VERY irritated and swollen. I just took her to the vet again 2 days ago, had all kinds of tests done. My vet was concerned with the clearness of her urine, so she sent out bloodwork to test Ginger for diabetes, kidney and liver problems - all came back negative. She also extracted urine directly from her bladder and tested it for an infection - but still came up negative. She suspects that nothing is showing up because her urine is so diluted?....She's doing a bacterial culture test to make sure 100% it's not an infection - results are due in a few days. In the meantime, I'm going crazy because Ginger is in pain - she's doing that "butt scooting" thing on the carpet (my vet just relieved her anal glands this last visit so that's not the issue) and yelping at the same time. Now she's wearing a diaper to avoid further. She's miserable.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? Incontinence to infection, clear urine, bladder infection, or whatever this is? I'm getting discouraged of finding out the cause...so far all the tests have been inconclusive or negative and each visit to my vet results in a HUGE bill. Any advise is appreciated

Look up "spaying incontinence in dogs". There is a med that can help.

I would suggest another round of antibiotics but also sometimes antitiobics themselves can cause a urinary infection itself. Giving cranberry capsules ( need to know the dogs weight) will help alot! YOu sprinkle it right on their food. It helps with an good cultures in the urine, just like it does with people.

After all- your vet has already done the other tests to rule out bigger problems.

Cranberry capsules can help. Probiotics, too. And I've heard that alfalfa tablets can be useful for spay incontinence, but I have never used them. I hear some caution is needed as to dosage. Maybe someone who has used alfalfa will chime in. You'll need to clean her frequently while she's in the diapers, or she'll get diaper rash. A little Desitin (or similar) will help if she already has irritation. For cleaning, you can get doggie wipes at a pet store, or you can use paper towels and plain water (with maybe a tiny splash of apple cider vinegar to correct the PH balance).

It doesn't sound like JUST spay incontinence, though. Most dogs with SI just leave a wet spot on their beds, they don't have all the other issues. Hopefully the vet can find out what the problem is.

Thanks for the replies. I'll talk to my vet about alfalfa capsules for her incontinence.

I think I have to take her back to the vet first thing tomorrow. I now find it very hard to believe that she doesn't have an infection, she has a brownish discharge that is completely crusted around her area now. I'm try to clean it, but I'm scared I might irritate it more.. and thanks for the diaper warning, I'm keeping her dry and clean.

Good thing is she's still wagging her tail...she's still playful and lovable as ever. I'll keep you all posted.
