Non-Prescription Alternatives for Incontinence (3yr old beagle)

I have a 3.5 year old beagle that was diagnosed with incontinence. She was spayed immediately following her first heat. The vet explained her condition to me and prescribed phenylpropanolamine. I am not against giving her this medicine, but I would prefer to explore alternative, non-prescription remedies first. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks. Jackie

Fresh chopped parsley can be effective at curtailing incontinence, you might want to google the amount to give though - I know for a 60lb boxer it's about 1 tsp. twice a day is the recommended amount.

I didn't know parsley would work, but I use alfalfa. Ask your vet about it before you give anything. Overdosing on green foods, can cause Heinz body anemia in dogs. Same as with onions. Small amounts of green stuff is ok, too much is bad.

Re: Non-Prescription Alternatives for Incontinence (3yr old beagle)

Thanks for the suggestions. I will check them out, as well as other ones that I have found through this site (ex., Leaks No More).

I have another question in hopes that others who have dogs with spay incontinence (SI) issues can help.

For the past few years, I have left Snoopy in a big exercise pen with her bed, water and toys during the day since I work full-time. She's always done fine in there. Recently, she started wetting her bed, so I took her to the vet and she was diagnosed with SI. I removed the bed since she wets it every day. I am keeping her in a big crate during the day and night, but I feel bad keeping her in there. I would prefer she'd be in her exercise pen again since it is roomier.

My question is what have you all tried when you have left your SI dog for extended periods of time while you waited for the treatment to work -- where do you keep him/her? do you place a towel or pads on the floor? etc...

Thank you. Jackie
