Distemper : (

My dog, Sasha, has been diagnosed with distemper. We rescued her and she came to us with the virus but did not show serious signs until yesterday. She was misdiagnosed when we first got her with kennel cough, a common mistake.

I know that we do not give assumptions, if you will, about what is wrong with our dogs, but Im asking for help.

Has anyone had a dog with distemper and how did you deal with it? She spent 1 night in the hospital and she is home now. So far I have been giving her anti seizure medication and muscle relaxers. She also is getting herbal immune boosters and water injection 1 time a day.

She has glossy eyes, she twitches when she is sleeping, and has they dreaded chewing gum fits" pretty regular now when she is awake, about once every 15 minutes. After the fit, she tends to go completely out of control for about 10 seconds bouncing around aimlessly.

Is she too far gone? Am I trying to hang on? I dont know what else to do but wait it out. Is it her time to go? Any and all help and comments are welcome. Thanks in advance for your understanding.......

I have no experience with Distemper. I am sorry to hear Sasha has the disease. What prognosis did the vet give you? I would continue giving her the medications as the vet instructed. Treatments take time so don't give up hope yet. Please keep the vet informed daily on how she is doing. Is there a reason why she is home and not on supportive care in the hospital.

I will send positive thoughts to Sasha and I hope she recovers soon.

Re: Distemper : (

I'm sorry to hear she has been diagnosed with distemper.

Over half of dogs diagnosed with distemper die in the first few weeks Even if they recover, there's a strong chance of permanent neurological damage, blindness or extensive tooth decay which causes them to lose their teeth at an early age.

Your vet will be the best judge of her chances for recovery. As a realist; if she were my dog I would not prolong treatment unless the vet considered her to have a mild case and the prognosis was good.

It's a horrible disease which in most cases even if the dog does recover it will never be the same and the after effects are often difficult to witness.

Please keep us updated on her prognosis!

I'm so sorry to hear that. You absolutely did what was best for her.

That must have been awful to go through. My deepest sympathy to you.
