Spay/Neuter at Vet vs Humane Societ

Okay, I'm trying to decide something. Maybe you guys could give your input. Mac'n'Roe are having their spay/neuter operations in a couple of weeks (April 4) which are scheduled at my normal veterinary office. The cost for each is $170 and $145 for a 50 lb dog. In addition, I'll have to pay for their dip that day prior to the procedure (another $70).

I checked with the local Humane Society and their prices are $65 and $55 for the procedures, plus an office visit (25 each). So, basically I would save $150 bucks by going to the Atl Humane Society. I would presume they perform a lot of these procedures.

I don't want to "go the cheap route" on a surgical procedure for my dogs...but $150 is basically two mange treatments for my two puppies.

What would you do?

I would always opt for my own veterinarian, though I'm sure the humane society is just as safe.

Sometimes the price difference is because on will give pain meds, use a better anaesthesia, will keep your dog under observation for the day ... You should ask about the details about the procedure and choose when you have more information.

good point. I will ask about the details at the Humane Society. Honestly, I am only half considering going there...but it's worth a look, right? I feel more comfortable with my vet since they know my dogs and it's right around the corner, etc., etc.

Thanks for your replies. I called and this is true. They go home right after the procedure, they get pain meds and antibiotics at the clinic, but none are sent home.

They are booked until the beginning of May. I don't want to wait that long anyway. I'm going to go with my vet on this one...but thanks for your replies.

Re: Spay/Neuter at Vet vs Humane Societ

Bugsy just got done at my local humane society and they did just fine. The sutures came out great and they sent me home with pain meds that were a lot cheaper than what i would have spent. The only thing they did not provide for me is the cone collar, but those are cheap.
The humane society's vets spay and neuter tons of pets everyday, trust me when I say that they are safe....my bugsy turned out just fine......and he gets vaccinated there too

Re: Spay/Neuter at Vet vs Humane Societ

I definitely think it would be safe to have it done at the Humane Society. They do so many of them. For me, it came down to a few things... timing (I have puppies of two different sexes...don't want to risk her going into heat), my vet is around the corner, they know my dogs already, they will stay overnight for observation... things like that.

I think if it wasn't for the timing thing...I probably would have considered it more. I think it's great that they offer the procedures at a lower cost. And, I'm sure it's safe and am glad you had such a great experience there
