Question Pernieal Hernia?

Not sure how to spell that really...

I've just had my 13 year old toy poodle at the vet, and she found a squishy sort of lump on his bottom that she says is a perineal hernia. She explained what it was, and why (I never thought that not having a dog fixed would result in any problem other than him peeing everywhere - no vet in 13 years ever mentioned it either), and what can happen if it's untreated, and gave me a couple referrels to a specialist clinic, and the local vet college, because my vet is a small rural animal hospital and they're not able to perform the operation there.

So... I'm just kind of looking for anyone who has experienced this and can reassure me a bit about a successful treatment of this condition. Hopefully...

Also, the reason for the vet visit was a cut on his leg. They decided not to stitch, and instead glued it, and I was given antibiotics for him for 10 days. I'm not sure if I should deal with the healing of that, and giving him the antibiotics first, or if the hernia is something that I should be contacting the surgical specialists about quickly. He doesn't seem to be in any pain or discomfort and he's having no trouble with his bowels or bladder, that I've noticed.

Re: Pernieal Hernia?

Well.. guess nobody's going to reply. Sorry for bothering, just figured in a dog forum somebody might have experience or a kind word. I was rather upset at the diagnosis and just wanted some support... Won't make that mistake again.

Don't be discouraged, perhaps no one has had experience with this. I can understand why you're so worried though. All I can suggest is to follow the advice of your vet. I wish you the best!
