Thoracolumbar Disc Disease-Answers today I had to put my beautiful Daisy to sleep. She was 8 years old. She was your typical active dog until a few nights ago. We noticed that she was having trouble jumping up onto the sofa and her back legs were trembling. She seemed to be in pain and could not get into a comfortable position. By morning she had lost the use of her back legs. We took her to the vet that morning and was told she was suffering from Thoracolumbar Disc Disease confirmed by xrays. It is a condition where the disk in her back pinchs her spinal cord due to swelling causing paralysis. The vet kept her overnight hoping that anti-inflammatory drugs along with muscle relaxants, tranquilizers and pain injection would bring down the swelling and I thought would have her be able to walk again. That wasn't the case. She did not improve. The vet said to take her in for surgery right away, problem with that is it cost $2,000.000 which I don't have. The other option would be to try to manage it with drugs and 6 weeks of 24 hour cage confinement. Daisy hated to be put in a cage and would not have been happy at all. My question is , has anyone else gone through the treatments in either case and what was the outcome? Did I make the right decision? |
