Exclamation My dog is hurting himself in the crate

Hello,

We recently adopted a dog from the humane society and he is a great addition to my life, but he has started to hurt himself in his crate.

He is rubbing his nose raw when he is left in his crate. I go home at lunch everyday to check on my boy and let him out and we play for an hour or so, then I put him back in for about four more hours.

Does anyone have a suggestion on what to do to make his crate time less stressful for him? He has chew toys with him all day to try and keep him occupied. He is over a year old, and I'm not sure how his last owners crated him so that might have something to do with it.

What breed is the dog? Perhaps really tiring him out before you leave would make him happier while you are gone. A tired dog is a good dog.
