Scarred Nose

So here's the deal. My dog has a scarred up nose. Like, his nose is black and the part of his nose is pink, like a layer is missing. And it's chapped all around that. And this has been here for who knows how long and occasionally it'll cut up and bleed.

I believe it's because he's licking his nose all the time. Like when we lick our lips, the get chapped and sore.

I tried to put scab relief on it with a band aid but he got that off in less that two seconds.

Any ideas?

Re: Scarred Nose

I would suggest having the vet look at it. If you put any meds like scab releif he could eat them, and they may not be safe. The best bet to me would be to have your vet have a look.

Re: Scarred Nose

I knew a dog that presented with a seriously chapped nose, and he turned out to have Lupus. So you should definitely see your vet.

You say this has been there for "who knows how long" meaning it's been going on for a long time?? You really need to get this looked at by a vet.

Re: Scarred Nose

if it looks scabby i would have a vet look at it. i've heard that some dogs' noses turn pink if they drink out of a plastic bowl, not sure if that's an old wives' tale or not.

Re: Scarred Nose

I'd definitely have a vet take a look. Lupus is a possibilty...and it could be something as simple as an allergy or just habit.

If you can get some bag balm that will help treat the dryness. It comes in a square green tin and you can get it at most pharmacys or even Tractor Supply in the animal section. Just rub a bit in and pet/distract the dog for 10 or so minutes to let it soak in.
