I wish they made Doggy Petobismol...

My poor girl.. i posted earlier asking about yogurt and loose stool, well the situation got worse after that!

She started getting blood in her diarrhea. I took her too the vet and they said it could be a number of things they ruled out Parvo though because she's had her shots.

I'm waiting for the fecal sample results. The doc sent her home with some meds that she said would treat giardia if that is, or some other parasite. I don't remeber the name something like metronidozole or something.

and we put her on a bland diet.

But in the mean time i wish i could do something for her she seems so miserable!! I guess i just have to wait it out...

It's so scary to see the blood in the diarrhea!!

Re: I wish they made Doggy Petobismol...

I wouldn't rule out parvo just because she is UTD on shots. I would still ask them to run the test. Treating empiracally for giardia is probably wise.

As far as Pepto, you can give it to dogs. Check with your vet for dosage.

However, you never want to "stop the flow" when it may be something infective. The idea is for the body to purge infection (bacteria, virus) from the system. Stopping the flow would only cause the illness to last longer.

I leave it up to my vet to determine a treatment plan. I would rather have him/her use supportive measures (replacing fluids rather than trying to stop the diarrhea, for instance).

Good luck with your dog. Keep us posted on progress.

Ah the joys of pet ownership. Glad to hear she is alright. I'd rather she had Giardia then Parvo. so, sort of good news. Hopefully she willl recover quickly.

I would consider your home water source and any standing water around your home. If you are NOT on a municipal system then you could very well have giardia in your home water system. And any melting snow, ponding of runoff, etc...in your yard can harbor giardia as well.

We don't have snow in our area, we are in CA. It was raining last week but i'm not sure how she would have gotten the rain water; she was just spayed so she's been indoors the last week.

She drinks the same water as we do, and we don't have giardia. We have a water filtration system.

I think she got it from the vet, because when we were there for the check up the vet mentioned there was this really bad giardia going around our area that's not responding to meds. And i was thinking in my head... OH great...

The first time she had it, she came with it from the breeder... GRRRR
It also might have been from another puppy since earlier on the 18th, we had out last puppy class. too.
