Time may be short for my old friend

I just got a call from my mother and she was concerned about my beloved terrier mix. We got her in 1992 and she has just recently turned 16 years old. I moved out in 2002 and my parents have kept her ever since. I now live in Texas and they live in Illinois, needless to say, it's been a while since I've seen her but I still care for her very much.

Everything seemed normal up until the past few weeks. She's not eating well and been throwing up more and more. She also has dropped around 4lbs in this time period, nearly 1/3 of her body weight.

She has been deaf for a couple of years now (at least hard of hearing) but she has always had moments of spunky energy even in her old age. Now there is nothing. She just constantly lies around, sleeping. It seems nothing can really motivate her to do much. It also appears that she is having trouble supporting her backside when she walks and she is constantly drinking water. She is taking her to the vet tomorrow but I fear that I may not get to see her one last time.

I'm sure people have experienced this sort of thing before. But I sit her typing this feeling helpless and a deep sadness has come over me.

I feel so sad for you. The same thing happened when I went to college. I'm glad you know what's going on. When I came home for Thanksgiving on the way home from the airport I asked about our dog and my Mom said she had put her to sleep. She hadn't told me because she didn't want to upset me. I was MAD at her for not letting me know that she was sick. I hope you can see your dog to say goodbye, if it is the time for her to go.
