There's a lot of bogus product out there. The only way to guarantee what you're getting is to get it from the vet. The manufacturers of these products will only stand behind them if they're purchased from a vet, just because there's so much bad stuff out there.
Some things aren't worth trying to save a few bucks. It could have been a lot worse than being ineffective -- it could have been dangerous.
