| dewclaws Hi, I am assuming you are talking about the dewclaws on the front legs? Every dog is born with them, but in some breeds its correct to remove them so the breeders do so at around age 3-5 days. Front dews don't cause the problems that rear ones do, just remember to clip them when you do toenails. I wouldn't be thinking of removing them now, at a year old, they have to cut right into that fully formed bone, its expensive, painful and a pain for after care too. They don't cause any problems.
If its rear claws you mean, talk to the vet. If they are loosely attached, they can be removed with not much problem, though its always more serious at one year of age, but if they are strongly attached, it will be more involved and more painful recovery, still those rear ones can be a pain in more ways than one, they can easily get torn and injured. Speak to your vet and get his opinion and the price for removing them. You may decide not to bother. The Great Pyrenees breed is a breed born with double dews on the rear legs and they are never removed. I never had a problem with them at all, mind you maybe the coat helped protect them. |
