Poop Watch 2008

So my Pyrenees woke me up every 3-4 hours last night with diarrhea. She seems to be acting normal.. we've been on 3 half mile walks.. she is eating/drinking and is not vomitting. Earlier today, I ran errands for about 3 hours and then came back and she needed to dart outside again. Since it was light out.. I went to inspect a bit. The diarrhea seemed a little mucusy. Instead of just rushing her to the vet..I decided to wait it out and just keep an eye on her.

Well.. she just went to the bathroom again and like a good mom, I went outside with her (and my flashlight!) to inspect again.. we definitely have gotten firmer.. not quite "normal" yet...and a little less mucusy.

Poor thing.. I hope this passes. If I have another sleepless night, we definitely will hit the Petsmart vet as soon as they open.

LOL...your post title made me laugh! I'm glad she's doing better.

I had a Great Pyrenees, Britt...he passed away in June 2005 at 121/2 years old...what wonderful dogs they are!

Re: Poop Watch 2008

For a problem that goes on for more than a few gastric episodes, a vet visit is an excellent idea.

For occasional very soft stools, a big dollop of plain canned pumpkin (not pie filling with sugar and spice and everything not-so-nice) with each meal does wonders for my girls.

If I find a big soft pile in the yard, they both get the pumpkin. since it isn't always obvious which is the patient. *

Oddly, the pumpkin also helps with constipation, though that is rarely a problem with my dogs.

* Come to think of it, it could be the neighbor dog that comes over nearly every evening to visit. Maybe I should start giving HIM pumpkin, too.

Re: Poop Watch 2008

well.. I had another sleepless night.. but we made it to the vet at around 12pm today.. well... after running all the tests and doing a full examination..her anal sacs were inflammed (and full!) and they did find some bacteria in the fecal exam or something to that effect. She is on some meds now and some prescription canned food to ease her stomach for a few days. Hopefully I will get more sleep tonight and no more poop watching with a flashlight at 3am!
