My BC has Giardia

He started having a lot of diarrhea and was vomiting two days ago, took him to my vet today and he tested positive for Giardia. He is now on an antibiotic for it and meds to control his vomiting. Anyway it was a total oversight on my part, i live on a lake, and my other dogs were vaccinated for it but when i adopted my Border Collie in November i totally forgot to include that with his other shots. This time of the year ducks like to come up on my lawn and of course crap all over, i was good at making sure he didn't eat any of it, but he would still manage to grab a taste or two before i could stop him. I would pretty much keep him out of the front yard (lakeside) but i did have them all out there the other day. So yeah now i have a sick dog that is very lethargic, but at least he hasn't puked since this morning which is good. Has anyone else experienced Giardia with their dog on here? Hopefully he will start feeling better soon, i feel really bad, i could have prevented it...argh!

Nope, just me. Took three months of butt burning run for the can 15 minutes after ANY meal. Ick. And rumbly tummy and cramps.

Re: My BC has Giardia

Sure have and it was not too fun. It wasn't Bridgette actually, it was my I guess ex-roommates dog who lived with Bridgette and I. He had all the symptoms too (some dogs have none! lucky!).

I would hate to catch it...I am currently desperately trying not to let Bridgette get any of the melted snow which I am sure is now teaming with giardia! gah! We've had SO many dogs at work test positive for it...it must be that time of year!

Re: My BC has Giardia

I havent had any experience with it. But between stray ducks pooping all over my yard and having a large pond in my backyard I am on alert for any symptoms. Puddles was vaccinated for it and Iris will get her at her 12 weeks vaccs.

I also didnt know that we were able to get it

Good luck Aussie.

Re: My BC has Giardia

Well he seems to be doing better today, he seems to have a lot more energy back, and has started eating/drinking so it looks like the meds are working well. My vet called me today to tell me the results of the bloodwork they did on him, his liver and white blood cell count are elevated, that is a little scary but she didn't seem to worried since he is improving. They are going to do more blood work in 3 weeks to see how things are.
