| Puppy with Red Mange I have a 5 month old puppy. He's been diagnosed with demodectic mange. It started with one dime size area with hair loss. The vet scraped, and found one dead mite..so I was using the topical Goodwinol. Then he had a pretty big hot spot the next week. I went to the vet. They scraped again, and found no mites around the hot spot, but then found many mites at all stages towards the back end of my pup at small areas.
I notified the vet I didn't want to dip him unless absolutely necessary. He recommended the a dip treatment (probably 6 treatments administered 2 weeks apart). He said that because it's found on all parts of the body, it would be considered systemic or generalized. His sister has it too.
I'm wondering what you guys think about the dipping procedure. It's amitraz (basically mitaban). I know a lot of people say it's poisonous. Believe me, I'm a scientist and understand this view. Why would they allow it if it was so dangerous to the dog? He had one treatment, and didn't have any major side effects. Both of them haven't had much of an appetite lately, so I'm watching that. He had a little trouble getting up the steps that evening..but that was about the extent of it.
If I was to choose not to continue with the dip...what would you suggest.
Another question, they say not to walk or run puppies extensively because it can injure joints and bone growth. At what age is this no longer applicable. What is considered a "long" walk?
