Question Odor when riding in cars

My pugger has begun emitting a strange odor when riding in the car. It's only happened in the car, never anywhere else that we can tell, and it now happens nearly every time she is sleeping or very tired and riding in the car. The smell was described by my hunter boyfriend, as smelling exactly like deer urine. A few times, she has even leaked a yellowish/brown liquid.

Has anyone of heard of something like this happening?
Is she possibly car sick? But she's sleeping?
She doesn't whine, pant, or anything strange that would let us believe she's uncomfortable, she actually really likes going for car rides.

Any help would be appreciated!
Thx, Pugger Moma

This is a dog who needs her anal gland expressed. You may want to talk to your vet or groomer about this. The gland is naturally expressed when she does her business, but it can become impacted for unknown reasons, and everything you've described is a syptom of this. But yes, it's quite common for this to happen during a car ride, or anytime the dog may be a little uncomfortable. Usually, panting or looking at her rear are signals that she may be a little uncomfortable. Her diet may also be a contributing factor...especially if her stool is not stiff. So, call your vet, and they may have some tips for you. Or better yet, if you can contact the breeder, they may have some info too. Good luck! BTW, welcome to our forum.

Orange County Ca is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Odor when riding in cars

You probably only notice it in a enclosed car. It's probably what Curb said.

If that doesen't do it then see a vet.

PS: Dog groomers will express the gland, and teach you, a lot cheaper than a vet.
