Post neuter care questions

My 7 month old black lab mix was neutered 3 days ago. He also had his dew claws removed at the same time. The vet has put him on some pain killers (deramaxx) and antibiotics (cephalaxin).

He is very active, in spite of the e-collar, and keeps jumping up on the furniture. I am worried he might rip his stitches, and I checked the area. It seems clotted, but not like it was bleeding recently. They don't come out for another 10 days. We don't let him out to play, but is it normal for him to try to be so active? I am not sure if he feels pain, because he doesn't let off any sign of being in distress. I am considering leashing him to stop him from hurting himself, but I think that would just be cruel. Does anyone have any pointers for me about how to handle his energy? I am not putting him in his crate because the collar is too big and I think the sound of it knocking against the crate walls really bothers him.

What also concerns me is that he seems to be stinking (constantly). I am not sure if this is because of the antibiotics, because they smell horrible. I don't think he is giving off any discharge. I just want to know if the smell is normal, as this is new to us.

PS- He started getting active today, since he is starting to get used to the e-collar. We have been supervising him constantly, so don't allow him to jump up on anything, so no damage done yet.

Re: Post neuter care questions

After 3 days, his incisions should be starting to heal. I wouldn't worry about him ripping the stitches out now. Neuters are not very painful, so if he had just been neutered, I would take him off of the pain killers at this point, but adult dewclaw removal can be very painful, and he might start licking/biting at the area if it hurt, so you might want to keep with the pain killers for a couple more days. The incisions should be healed up enough after 7 days, no reason to keep him in the e-collar for the whole 13 days, unless he really starts going at them when you take it off. You can definitely take him for a walk. Just don't let him run and jump too much yet. Poor dog (and poor you!); I can't imagine trying to keep a 7-month-old Lab mix inside for so long!
