Puppy has Diarrhea

Okay, I have another thing I am worried about. Last night I fed my puppy puppy chow, which is what he was eating back at the breeders place, and I gave him 2 treats. He ate all the food given to him, which was about a cup and the treats. Yesterday when I took him outside to go to the bathroom his stool looked fine(before he got the treats) and like 4 hours after he ate them, but today it is very runny and I am worried. He has water at all times and I'll probably feed him again around noon, with the puppy chow, not the treats.

This probably isn't that serious is it? Do you think the treats caused it? Should I feed him again at noon? Should I keep water by him at all times so he doesn't get dehydrated? Could the nerves of just being brought home and taken from his mum cause it also?

Re: Puppy has Diarrhea

ok sluggish puppy
drinking alot
just moved to new home
"dire rear"

I think you need to have the vet check for coccidia
this is a very common parasite that puppies can get after moving to a new home due to stress

it exists in the mother and even if the pup came home without it showing up.... increased stress from moving to a new home can cause it to flourish and make a puppy pretty sick..... it can be fatal if untreated....

I think I would bring a stool sample to the vet and even if it is not found I would ask to treat for coccidia for ten days.... it won't hurt the puppy and you can nip it in the bud if it is just beginning .....

if the vet refuses and the dire rear continues then I would bring another stool sample back to the vet in a few days and have it checked again.

Re: Puppy has Diarrhea

is your puppy going to die if you don't get to the vet until tomm. ? no
but the sooner you can get this checked and taken care of the better
it doesn't take puppies long to get VERY VERY sick and dehydrated....

I would also want to make sure that you rule out the beginnings of parvo..... and other very dangerous diseases....

I just went and found some of your other posts....

this puppy really needs to see a vet ASAP
if you have only had him a day it means he has not had all his shots yet
and I am concerned.....

between the symptoms you reported yesterday and the diarrhea I really do think he needs to have a vet check.....

I would want to check for worms and make sure there is no parvo or something like that

it could be nothing but the sooner you can get it figured out the better for Ryot
who is adorable by the way

Re: Puppy has Diarrhea

Pretty much the same as Shalva. Coccidia is common is pups and you can just drop a stool sample off at the vet to have it tested. Parvo is serious and needs to be treated, but if your pup is active, drinking and eating he should be fine; but it is always better to have him checked, and be safe than sorry. Parasites can be an issue if he's not up to date on his deworming. More than likely, it is all the stress. He went to a new home, he ate something that he wasn't used to, he ate too much, etc. There are a lot of factors that can bring on diarrhea. I wouldn't add anything extra, like snacks to his diet. I would also make sure not to feed him too much, even if he wants more. Check the recommendations for his weight on the bag to give you an idea. When you feed something new, it changes the bacteria/gut flora in the pups intestines. This change can be too hard on his system and cause the diarrhea.
If you just got him, it would be a good idea to have the vet check him out anyway and get him set up on his heartworm, deworming and vaccination schedule. Did the breeder send him home with a vaccination and deworming schedule that he already received?

Re: Puppy has Diarrhea

I am just going to take him to the vet tonight, if they aren't closed or sometime tomorrow.
