Recovery

Hello all,
My one year old blue heeler/Australian shepherd mix broke his leg two days ago, had it repaired yesterday and is now back at home. Doc has ordered 8 weeks confinement. This dog is used to running about 10 miles a day, is very bright and energetic, and I'm wondering how I'll keep him stimulated and entertained for 2 months, without taking him for walks. Any ideas? Thanks.

Sometimes tranquilizers are necessary, but their bodies kind of get used to those after awhile and you need to up the dose sometimes. Lots of things to chew on would be good, and maybe things that he needs to work on getting the food, like a Kong full of peanut butter or liver. I was using Greenies alot with my dog that had knee surgery.

Is he on pain medication?

Thanks, the Kong is a great idea. He hasn't had much appetite yet, but has much less pain and I think will be wanting to run in a day or two. He likes the Rimadyl tablets, they must be tasty. I made a puzzle with a length of rope and a stuffed jack, which keeps him occupied a bit. I'm also thinking of which of his dog friends are less active, for company. Doc mentioned the possibility of tranquilizers, we'll keep that in mind.
