| This may not be health but extreamly sad :( Hi. I am visiting my gram's house in North Carolina for the holidays and she got a dog a few months ago. She doesnt alow the dog to go inside and its is pooring rain like it has been all winter. It only has a small little gated area and its just sitting there in the rain!!! I recemending getting one of those doggy coats but she refuses to do anything to help it. Im worried that is can catch a sever cold condidering it is 40 degreesF outside...Please tell me your opinion. |

| Sorry, but Gram or not, I'd be phoning the SPCA in that area, where she lives, and reporting it. Ask them to keep the call anonymous, so you won't have a family quarrel about it. Sometimes just a visit from them is enough, to make a person at least get a suitable dog house, and if not, it may be better for the dog to have a kinder home. Thanks for caring. The dog can indeed get pneumonia and die if it can't get into reasonable shelter. |

| Her dog should at least have cover. I dont know why she doesnt want her dog inside? It is sad. Why even have a dog? Does she take the dog for walks? Do anything with it? |

| Aside from the obvious fact that dogs are pack animals, and need human interaction, dogs can suffer from exposure just like a human. If the dogs core temperature drops too much, all the blood is diverted from their extremeties to keep their organs alive. If hypothermia is allowed to continue, it will damage the organs as well as causing the extremeties to die from lack of blood flow. Even if the core temperature is returned to a normal range, long term damage can result from repeated exposure.
If its too cold outside for you, then its too cold for the dog.
If your grandmother can't provide the basic necessities (shelter) for the dog, then she needs to rehome it. |

| Good grief ! You didn't say the dog has a heated dog house in the first post, I got the indication there was no shelter. Its not likely that the SPCA or any organization will find fault in that case, since the dog does have shelter. Its nice if a dog can come inside, but at least it has to have a shelter, which this dog does. |

It is definatly not a case for othe SPCA but still is very cruel. I had a talk with her about it. I didnt mention before but it is really lonely. Also, I went out there and dried it and tried to get it into its doghouse. She plans to get a better area for it and possibly get another dog. Im currently neutral about the other dog thing bacause on one side, its extreamly lonely but on the other hand she is not a good dog owner... |

| Yes, I agree its a sad situation, Pinkpuppy. There are so many dogs in this situation, where its not downright abuse, so the SPCA is not goint to help, but many dogs have a sad and lonely life because the owners just don't get it. ! Some dogs just hate the doghouse they've been given, too, and that doesn't help either.
I hope you carry on talking to your Gran and keep pushing to get either a better doghouse, or maybe even just house or porch time, even if its just at night? Do you think those things could help? I suppose at least if she gets another dog it won't be so lonely, but for sure then she needs two doghouses, because some dogs don't like to share a house. I am so glad you are looking out for this dog, you may be the best advocate it has. |

| Why does she have a dog ? It sounds like she does not want it, and does not interact with it. It makes no sense. Tell her she is going to be put in the same sort of home ! |

| I didn't realize the dog had a dog house. The others are right, as far as the authorities are concerned, love and attention aren't part of the "basic necessities" they require. How sad. |

| Dogs are family I dont know about anyone else but IMO when someone gets a dog i would think that it becomes a part of the family when we got our first dog a Sharpei he was like our child when we built our new home 3 years ago we added room just for him (I know sounds crazy) but he loved it and he knew it was his room. Maybe we are extream but our dogs are part of our family and are treated as such. And i repeat this is my opinion only

| I agree with you, Sharon. When you get any kind of pet, be prepared to care for that animal for its lifetime which could be 15 to 20 years. I hate it when I read, "Dog needs room to run, Moving and can't take dog with us, baby allergic." Give me a break. People sometimes think animals are disposable. Like the news item on TV last night, a mother cat and her kitten were literally thrown over a chain link fence enclosed in a cardboard box and left to die. Luckily, some good citizen got involved and rescued both of them and they are doing fine at a local animal shelter. This is only minor compared to what could happen but like I said, people think they can just discard their pets whenever they want. I should say some people because there are plenty of animal loving people. Sorry, I will get off the soapbox but at least I feel a little better. |
