Is it safe to abort puppys to spay a dog..

Ok heres the thing I got Chloe from a lady that was getting rid of her for someone else that was going through a divorce. I got her on Thursday and took her to the vet on Friday and she said that she is pretty sure that Chloe is pregnant but that she could terminate the pregancy and spay her if we did it soon. Is this safe? I called the lady that I got her from and she said she must have been pregnant when she came to her house because she had only had her about 2 weeks and she had no idea what other dogs she had been around before she came to her house. I trust my vet so I schedualed the surgery for Monday. Am I doing the right thing?

Yes, I feel you are doing the right thing. First off you are doing the right thing by Chloe. It is much safer to have her spayed and abort her litter then to have her go through pregnancy and delivery. The spay will be a bit more complicated, but nothing that most vets dont do regularly. It is still a common procedure. Remember to follow your vets instructions and keep her calm for several days afterwards.

Good luck!! She is a beautiful girl

Yes, you are doing the right thing. It may not be ideal, but vets do this quite often. During my rescue project we run into a lot of dogs that are pregnant and are there to be spayed. If they are too far along they obviously won't do it but otherwise they will. NONE of the dogs we have done had any issues after. Like you said, you trust your vet.

Thanks you guys you made me feel better about doing it. I am already really attached to her and would hate for something to happen to her.

Amanda there is risk in any surgery but the vets monitor the dog very closely. It will all be over in no time. Then you will be asking... How do I get her to take it easy? LOL

That will be the hardest part keeping her calm. All my dogs have already been spayed when I got them so this is the first time I have gone though it. How long will she have to stay calm?

this is a very very wise thing and a brave thing for you to do and it shows how much you already love this dog, because you are doing what is right for her.
I wish there were more like you
please let us know how she does

No doubt longer then she will be happy to be. LOL Mine usually were up and almost normal the next day or so. You will have to keep her from jumping for about 2 weeks. She can walk around the same day though my experience is they are usually happy to sleep that day away. Is your vet one that requires they stay over night the first night?

I would spay her too, IF she wasn't nearing the latter stages of pregnancy, which is doubtful if the vet was only "pretty sure" she was.

They longer she is pregnant, the more risk to the mama dog during a pregnant spay, but if you do it early enough, it isn't that much more complicated than a regular spay. Also the longer they are pregnant, the longer the recovery time too.....usually.

Kudos to you though for doing it though. I think the spay will be much easier on her than delivering pups. Especially since you have no idea what the male (or males) were. She could have been tagged by a dog much larger than her, in which case she would likely have trouble delivering. An emergency C-section wouldn't be easier on her, or you either. They run about $1500 here.

Re: Is it safe to abort puppys to spay a dog..

My Chow , Jasmine , got out of the yard before we could get her fixed and was pregnant when we took her to have her spayed . It was early into the pregnancy so I had the pups aborted and had her spayed . She was the runt of the litter and had medical problems as a puppy and the vet said giving birth would be dangerous for her . I didn't think twice about it , plus there is already enough dogs sitting in pounds and shelters already .
