Vision

my girlfriends dog is an almost 4 month old mutt and we are beginning to think she might have vision problems. We assume this because she is barking at things that aren't there, is you bounce a ball she is fine following it left to right but can't see to follow it up and down. Not sure vision is a problem but I was curious if there is something you can do with a young puppy to help make sure their eyesight developes properly. Any vitamins or supplements I can give her to help her out?

Re: Vision

If it's something genetic, like progressive retinal atrophy, then there's really nothing you can do (though for one type of PRA there is a supplement that may help slow the process down).

If you suspect vision problems, the dog should be seen by a board certified opthamologist who can properly diagnose any eye conditions. Around here, you need a referral from your regular vet to see the specialist.

My guess is that you just have a young puppy that hasn't learned that balls go up and down in addition to side to side and that she hears or smells things that you can't and that's what she's barking at. I'd provide her a good quality kibble - that should be all she needs.
