| Re: my pup has parvo how well do i need to clean my home? First, I wouldn't clean carpets and furniture until your pup has recovered. The pup will still shed viral particles in body fouids for a few weeks after it appears to be healthy. Ask the vet for more info on this.
When you do clean the house clean like you have never cleaned before.
You can't clean fabrics (carpeting and furniture) with bleach. You won't have anything left if you do. Carpeting and furniture needs to be steam cleaned by a professional that is aware of the situation. They should use a special anti-bacterial cleaner solution.
In the meanwhile you can clean a few things...
Everything else in your house that is washable needs to go in the washer on hot (if it's ok for that fabric) and use bleach on things that you can. The walls and hard floors need to be disinfected with a strong bleach/water solution (1:5). You damp mop/wipe and then let the damp surface dry by itself. Do not wipe dry. It is the oxidation that takes place during evaporation that actually kills the virus particles. Any hard surface that cannot be cleaned with bleach and water should be sprayed until wet with Lysol cleaner. No other brand, Lysol only. Again, let it air dry.
And before you do anything at all...
Throw away everything the dog used like bedding, bowls, food, leashes, toys, everything in the garbage in a sealed bag placed outside the house. Do not buy new stuff until a couple of weeks after the pup has recovered. Until then use paper plates for the pup to eat from and use some sort of plastic disposable bowl (can be found near the paper plates at the grocery store) for water. Let the pup use an old bath towel for bedding and wash it every few days in hot water and bleach. Be sure to pick up after your dog right away outside and don't walk the dog where other people with dogs walk their dogs.
Once the parvo is over with then have the carpets and furniture cleaned, keep washing household stuff on hot, disinfect hard surfaces one more time, and then replace your dog's supplies.
(we had a litter of foster pups from the shelter who all came down with parvo the first week) |
