Best Diabetic Dog Food?

Hi All,

Been looking around online for the best forum - by looking around, I can clearly see there's lots of activity here and I hope someone can help..

My parents have a 9 year old Sheba Inu with diabetes. He' eats dog food made by his vet which is working fine (I think it's called "medi cal fiber formula k9"). The problem is that my parents spend over 2 hours a day removing all the rice in there so their doesn't throw up.

Is there a brand of dog food tailored to dogs with diabetes that's well regarded by the community? I hate the thought of my parents spending 2 hours each day just preparing meals for their dog. There has to be something out there...

Thanks!

Re: Best Diabetic Dog Food?

You want to look for a grain free, high protein/low carb diet. (canned is typically better than dry). Maybe something like Evo canned would be great. They have a variety of formulas that contain 95% meat. However, there are tons of grain free low carb foods out there to look into. The link below has some listed:

ETA: I forgot to mention that I think there are a couple of formulas that are supposed to be tailored to diabetes (like the Hills one), but I have heard terrible things about them.....dogs/cats actually getting worse on those formulas and then doing better on grain free.

Re: Best Diabetic Dog Food?

Thanks for the quick response. I've forwarded your information to my parents to see if they've tried any of these options. Seems like the real challenge is finding something your dog will eat (that's right for his dietary needs). Hopefully they find something that saved them 2+ hours day in preparing his meals.

Thanks Again!

Re: Best Diabetic Dog Food?

My Bubba is diabetic and we feed him Diabeth HF by Walthams. You need a prescription card from your vet to purchase this food. In addition, we add a home prepared Meatloaf to mix in with his dry food (the meatloaf is for diabetic dogs too). The prescription card was given to us by Bannfied and the food is purchased at Petsmart. How long has your dog had diabetes?

Re: Best Diabetic Dog Food?

Thanks for the response. Jack (my parents' dog) has been diabetic for about 2 years I think. It started with the seizures. He's quite stable now, energetic, everything it fine. Just looking for something easier to prepare for him.

Thanks again!
