Entropion Surgery

moose, my saint, is scheduled for entropion surgery next week. Entropion is an eyelid problem where the lids have excess flesh and roll under. Left untreated, it will cause blindness due to corneal abrasions. I have not personally seen any surgeries for this done. I know all the technical things, but was wondering if anyone had any personal experience with this.

I have not personally had to deal with this but I saw a show on it where 3 littermates had it, obviously a genetic issue. Well, the surgery was fast and very simple it seemed. The dogs were up and going in like 3 days so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Ya know, I work in a vet clinic, and I am used to assisting in surgeries and all, but when it is your OWN dogs, well, the mom in me kinda takes over! Doc said he will have to wear a cone for at least a couple of weeks. AND we are having him neutered as well, so he is being worked from top to bottom, so to speak.
It is an inherited trait, and very prevalent in saints.

Smile Entropion Surgery

Cuddles, my 116 lbs. Alaskan Malamute, just underwent double entropion surgery on 2/16/07. He started having real problems with tearing & red tear stains when we moved to the beach in 10/06. He was a little groggy the first day, but within 36 hrs. was his old self. He came home with an elizabethian collar (which he wore for 2 wks.) on which made him like a bull in a china shop at first. Eventually he got the hang of it & was able to navigate around the house without much difficulty. He even figured out how to get onto the picnic table & well house (2 of his favorite perches). We had to put medicated ointment to ward off infection in his eyes for 1 wk. & vasoline the 2nd week to help prevent scaring. I was very nervous about surgery around his eyes and put it off for a year, but we found an older caring vet who was experienced with the surgery & he did a fine job on Cuddles. No more excessive tearing, red tear stains & he keeps both eyes wide open now. He's back to his old self, got the collar off Friday, & is so glad to be able to run full tilt around the yard. We're so glad we had the surgery for him. His quality of life is definitely improved!

Hi,

Entropion surgery is fairly common in practice. The surgery itself is simple: you just cut a bit of eyelid out.
However to get a perfect result is not that easy at all. To decide how much eyelid to remove being the trickiest point. It is always worth removing a bit less rather than a bit to much. If you havent removed enough, you can alwayd operate again. If you have removed too much, you end up with the other situation which is called an ECtropion. Surgical correction is more complex for an ectropion.

In conclusion, you should not worry oo much but possibly expect to have the surgery done twice if necessary.

Good luck
