| dog in heat I was wondering if a dog can get locked up if the female is not all the way in heat, and if so can the dog get pregnant at that time? |

the answer to the first question is YES
the second to the second depends on what all the way in heat means

| Re: dog in heat what i mean by all the way, I believe she is still in the first stage of her heat, the stage when the female usually snips or otherwise has no part of that stuff yet, but i believe this dog was a breeder and so just stands there. I know this is a weird question, but i'm trying to find out if we need to get an abortion shot or not. |

| Re: dog in heat How about a spay? That will solve the immediate problem and head off lots of future ones. |

| Re: dog in heat nice input no help though, i would like an answer to my question, not a riot act, one dog at a time still have one male to fix before we work on the females you can't spay while they are in heat anyways |

I would certainly investigate this option with my vet if I thought a bitch may have unintentionally become pregnant and I was planning to spay her anyway. |

| Re: dog in heat technically you can but I wouldn't its dangerous and very expensive....
as far as whether your dog could be pregnant and she is at the beginning of her cycle then yes..... the semen can live a while in the girl.... so yes
I would have her spayed as soon as she comes out of season.... I understand the necessity of one at a time....but I would start with the girls and move to the boys..... if she is pregnant yo ucan do the spay while she is pregnant and that is safer for her long term than the mismatch shot.

Agreed. It's usually best to get the girls done first as it will keep any accidents from occurring in your house. |

| Re: dog in heat The mismatch shot really jerks the female's hormones around, and this can cause problems in the future. If you're planning to spay her anyway, I'd have it done ASAP. Ask your vet for the best timing. And, yeah, if you're trying to get everyone fixed one at a time, I'd start with the females. The males aren't a really big deal to have fixed, but if the girls aren't fixed, you'll end up with a pregnancy eventually, no matter how hard you try not to. Plus you won't have to put up with every male in the county showing up at your door while she's in heat. I can live with an intact male, but it's much more difficult with intact females. |
