Exclamation I Feel So Stupid

I was told when I had Teddie Vaccinated and neutered, in 6 months he'd need his Bordetella booster. Yesterday I took him in and got his shot. Well now I feel very stupid because I'm reading all shots i.e. Parvo, DHLPP, and Bordetella are all yearly shots. Rabies is 3 years and heart worm testing is yearly also.

I'm hearing different times from different vets, only searchs, and books. Books are telling me six months for Parvo a year for Rabies. Vets are telling me 6 months for Bordetella and online is telling me a year for everything and 3 years for rabies. What is the right vaccine schedule and will this early vaccine really hurt Ted? It's been over 24 hours since his shot and he's eating, drinking, and running around like normal. I haven't noticed anything different. I'm holding my head in stupidity and can't stop thinking how stupid I am for getting him that shot. I haven't been this mad at myself in a while so any reassurance would be great!

Also since he's gotten this booster super early how long do I need to wait for his next round? I don't want to make the mistake of doing this again. Will it be a year or should it be longer than a year?

I'm getting more and more confused as I write this.

LOL I think the actual requirements vary from area to area. You can draw a titer also annually to see how well your dog is covered from a specific disease. Then you won't be over vaccinating which can also be dangerous. I am not trying to confuse you more, sorry.

I wouldn't even bother with the bordetella shot, I got it for Snoopy once when he was 5 months old but only because it was required for obedience school. I probably won't get it again as it only protects against certain types of kennel cough and there are several other strands of it so it would probably just be a waste of money.

I know how you feel, I was confused reading it.

No, seriously, most dogs don't have bad reactions to vaccinations, SOME dogs do. IDK about the timing for the next one, but IMO I don't think you've hurt him. Just keep a really close eye on him for a while. Was it a single vaccine? Those usually cause less reactions from what I've read it's the combos that really knock the immune system for a loop.

I am more confused. You'd think by now I'd have it down.

What is a titer and if you don't mind me asking how often do you vaccinate your dogs?

Elliot came down with Kennel Cough and since I was told Ted was do for his Bordetella I thought I'd better have it done. Now I'm banging my head against a wall.

I have to get the Bordetella because Teddie goes up to the adoptions and when I bring home dogs like Elliot I take the risk of him getting sick if he's not utd. With Elliot coming down with Kennel cough and staying at my house it only reinforces that he's got to have it.

Thanks Chrissy. I've been keeping a closer eye on him and making sure he's not having any type fo reaction. I'm also going to make sure he gets more than enough water.

Re: I Feel So Stupid

a titer is a blood test that determines level of immunity
The AVHMA last year went to three year guidelines for distemper and parvo and the others in the dhlpp and then rabies is mandated by law and that varies from state to state.

My personal vaccination schedule is

puppy shots at 9 and 15 weeks
rabies at 6 mos..... (as recommended by Dr. Jean Dodds of Hemopet)

booster of rabies a year later so at 18 mos.
boost distemper/parvo at a year

after that I run titers (a blood test to determine immunity level) every 3 years and vaccinate as necessary based on the level of immunity that my dog has.

I vaccinate rabies every 3 years as mandated by law in NH

remember rabies is mandated by law in the states
the other the dhlpp is not mandated by law
bordatella I generally don't give but my dogs are not kenneled and don't go to places that require it.... if your dog is kenneled or is going to training classes then you might be required by that facility to give that vaccine..... I personally don't give it as it often doesn't cover the strains of kennel cough that are going around .

I would suggest doing a websearch on Dr. Jean Dodds.... she is a foremost veterinary epidemiologist that has done significant research in vaccinations and vaccine protocols when she was at Southern Colorado State U. she is currently working on various vaccine challenges......

I hope this helps
