parvo puppy.... update please

I am very curious about that myself. Shalva, how much does Tamaflu cost? Seems like a great thing if it works for even one puppy. Parvo is such a horrible way to go. That is why I tend to send people to the vet too quickly sometimes. I have seen far too many puppies die while their owners are sitting around wondering if it is worth a visit to the vet. They suffer so much too.

Inga, I always think too fast is better than not fast enough. And I'm the same way with TBD after all my personal experiences with it.

I think the poster said she paid 46 bucks.....

this is a perfect example of needing to take information to vets sometimes..... vets are not always up on the latest treatments for things.....

a few years ago I had a dog that was lame..... from panosteitis very severe pano and it was a long time and someone on a bulletin board suggested giving kae albon which is a drug to treat coccidiosis, a parasite.... I told my vet I wanted to try it.... he looked at me like I was nuts..... but he trusts me so he gave me the drug.... withing hours Kae was feeling so good, she went from a dog that was on the ground with totally atrophied muscles to a lunatic running around obviously not in pain and we had to crate her so she wouldn't hurt herself because she had no muscle tone..... and after that we built her muscles back up and she is was as good as new..... its a strange thing but sometimes we have to take things to the vet.....

I am glad the person had an open minded vet who was willing to give it a shot... now hopefully it continues to work.

I had a situation with a Shar Pei in rescue. I took one look at the dog and knew it had Shar Pei fever. The vet the women went to never heard of it but then researched it and agreed. Vets are only people as well. I think the best vets in the world are the ones that say they don't know everything. It is a scary person that thinks they do know everything. Wisdom comes from all walks of life. Different people have different experiences why not benefit from everyone else's knowledge?

I was wondering too, I hope everything is going good. Pavro is scary. At our old apartment, the people next to us, there pup got parvo, and it was so sad, and the pup didn't make it.

I guess this was in response to my little girl? She is doing terrific. She had her first solid bowl movement yesterday. (That was just day 4, if you can believe that!!) She is more energetic now than she has been since we got her.

I am definitely a firm believer in Tamiflu now. I will also say, my vet said the biggest advantage she had was that I stayed up with her all night, giving her fluids every hour. I've seen where people talk about opening the bathroom door in the morning to find the puppy dead. That was not about to happen here.

Samantha did so well, I almost wondered if it was a weaker strain, but I found out one of her littermates died at the shelter (the couple that adopted him brought him back after it started.)

Just so you know exactly what I did:

Pepto, 3cc every four hours, sometimes an extra 1cc in between doses if not doing so swell.

Reglan, 3cc every 12 hours. Again, I added an extra 1cc between doses. My vet said it would be fine. VERY IMPORTANT- If they vomit give another dose immediately. Once we started this she only vomited one time, and that was in the car on the way home from the vet, and was very close to her next dose.

Pedialyte 3-4cc every hour. You absolutely must force them to take liquids. Samantha stopped drinking voluntarily right away. THEY WILL DIE IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS!

Tamiflu- My vet called in the 12mg/mL suspension. I gave about .8cc every 12 hours. It cost $46 for one bottle, which is enough to cover at 3 animals, if need be.

Prayer- This, of course is optional, but hey, I figured God would have a hard time saying no to such a precious little angel : )

This was all very time consuming (I took off Thurs. and Fri.) but definitely worth it.

Good on you for making the effort to save your little puppy. So many people think it's not worth the effort.

One question. How much does your puppy weigh? So I can keep this info in case I ever have to use this info. Hopefully never.

Sammy weighs 8.5lbs now, she was at 10 before parvo.

The dosage for Tamiflu for puppies is 1mg/1lb of the dog's weight, so .8cc of a 12mg/cc dose came out perfect. Twice daily.
